Young Lothar: An Underground Fugitive in Nazi Berlin
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.38 $Lothar Orbach, the youngest son of a German Jewish family, was just 14 when the Nazis began rounding up Berlin's Jews. His promising education was aborted; his close-knit family splintered. When the Gestapo came for Orbach's mother on Christmas Eve 1942, they escaped with false papers; his mother found sanctuary with a family of Communists and Orbach-under the assumed identity of Gerhard Peters-entered Berlin's underworld of "divers". He scraped a living by hustling pool, cheating in poker and stealing-fighting, literally, to stay alive. Outwardly he became a cagey amoral street thug, inwardly he was a sensitive, romantic boy, devoted son and increasingly religious Jew, clinging to his humanity. In the end, he was betrayed and sent to Auschwitz, on the last transport, in 1944. This singular coming of age story of life in the Berlin underground during WWII is, in essence, a story of hope, even happiness, in the very heart of darkness.

Hincmar of Rheims: On the divorce of King Lothar and Queen Theutberga (Manchester Medieval Sources MUP)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.00 $In the mid-ninth century, Francia was rocked by the first royal divorce scandal of the Middle Ages: the attempt by King Lothar II of Lotharingia to rid himself of his queen, Theutberga, and replace her with Waldrada, the mother of his children. Lothar, however, faced opposition to his actions; kings and bishops from neighbouring kingdoms, and eventually the pope himself, were gradually drawn into a crisis affecting the fate of an entire kingdom and which helped durably shape European politics and culture. This is the first professionally published translation of a key source for this extraordinary episode: Archbishop Hincmar of Rheims's De divortio Lotharii regis et Theutbergae reginae. Surviving in a single manuscript produced under Hincmar's own guidance, On the divorce of King Lothar and Queen Theutberga offers eye-opening insight not only on the political wrangling of the time (in which Hincmar was a major participant), but also on early medieval attitudes towards a host of issues including magic, penance, gender, the ordeal, marriage, sodomy, the role of bishops, and kingship. The translation is cross-referenced to Letha Böhringer's MGH edition and includes a substantial introduction and annotations which put the case into its early medieval context and explain Hincmar's sometimes-dubious methods of argument. The text provides fascinating insights into Carolingian society and will make an ideal source text for many undergraduate courses on medieval gender and sexuality, magic or kingship. It will also appeal to all academics and non-specialists interested in this most lurid of cases.

Death March into Russia: The Memoir of Lothar Herrmann
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.19 $In this rare World War II memoir, Lothar Herrmann, a soldier from the Wehrmacht, details his unimaginable experience as a German Prisoner-of-War in the Soviet Union.Hermann grew up in Bavaria, going through the RAD (Nazi Labor Service) before being conscripted into a Wehrmacht Mountain Division (the Gebirgsdivision) in 1940. He participated in Germany’s advance through southern Ukraine in 1941 and, in 1944, was arrested in Romania while retreating to Germany. The Romanians passed him onto the Soviets, who placed him in a forced labor camp, where he watched two-thirds of prisoners around him die. In 1949, Herrmann was finally released to Germany and returned to Bavaria.Three million German troops were taken prisoner by the Red Army and around two-thirds of them survived to return to Germany in 1949, but their stories are little known. Klaus Willmann draws on interviews he conducted with Herrmann, to recount these astonishing recollections in the first-person. Depicting the challenges of growing up in Nazi Bavaria to becoming a Soviet prisoner-of-war, this is a gripping and enlightening account from a necessary but rarely explored perspective.

AQUALOG Killifishes of the world: Old World Killis II (English and German Edition)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 3.23 $Another volume compiled by our Expert Dr. Lothar Seegers. Many of the 550 color photos have been taken by himself. The groups of panchaxes, Aplocheilus, Epiplatys, Nothobranchius, Aphanius and others are introduced in this sequel, again with all varieties, localities and exact scientific names. Their colors and size (most of them reach only 3 to 8 cm) make them the ideal aquarium inhabitants. The first volume already triggered off a rising interest in killis. All AQUALOG -reference books introduce each fish (incl. breeding forms etc.)with at least one color photo and a short description. The ingenious code number system labels every known or newly discovered fish with an individual code number. This number re mains, despite any scientific renaming. Moreover, it enables you to communicate internationally about any fish without the danger of confusion regarding local names! Your AQUALOG -reference book always stays up-to-date! All newly discovered or bred species are regularly published as supplements or so-called "stickups" in our AQUALOGnews. These stickers can be attached to the empty pages at the end of your book.
