The collaboratively written, multi-part introduction locates Vincent and Louise within the framework of the spirituality of seventeenth-century France. This rich overview not only provides solid background information on each of the founders but also offers a true sense of their spirituality and practicality, insights into the complementary nature of their relationship, and an understanding of their legacy, which deeply influenced Elizabeth Ann Seton, Rosalie Rendu, D.C. and Frederick Ozanam. Following the insightful introduction are the original rules of the communities that Vincent and Louise founded, the Congregation of the Mission and the Daughters of Charity, commentaries on these rules, and a selection of other writings from both founders. Louise-Élisabeth Vigée Lebrun (1755-1842), née à Paris, est une peintre française. Elle compte au nombre des plus grands portraitistes de son temps, comme Quentin de La Tour ou Jean-Baptiste Greuze. Elle ne reviendra à Paris que six ans plus tard pour entrer comme pensionnaire à l'école du couvent de la Trinité. À onze ans, la jeune fille quitte le couvent et vient vivre aux c'tés de ses parents. On dit qu'à l'époque, elle se trouve laide et sans grâce, mais dès ses quatorze ans elle est une des plus belles femmes de Paris. Inconsolable, à la mort de son père en 1767, elle décide de tout donner à ses passions que sont, la peinture, le dessin, le pastel. Le succès d'Élisabeth ne se dément pas. Ses portraits de femmes à la fois ressemblants et flatteurs finissent par lui attirer la sympathie de Marie-Antoinette qui fait d'elle son peintre favori. Ce sera la protection de la reine, traduite par un ordre de Louis XVI qui lui permet d'être reçue à l'Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture en 1783.
