Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.49 $On December 5, 2011, in the prime of his life, Patrick McGoldrick was diagnosed with ALS—a disease that typically takes your life within three years. For Patrick it was much shorter. Barely one year later, on December 26, 2012, he breathed his last breath. The impact of Patrick’s story, both in his living and his dying, spread across the world and thousands leaned in to learn from his journey. Included is his last sermon, preached from a disease-ridden body with slurred speech, but heard by thousands across the world.

The Kennedys: America's Emerald Kings A Five-Generation History of the Ultimate Irish-Catholic Family
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 53.01 $Meticulously researched both here and abroad, THE KENNEDYS examines the Kennedy's as exemplars of the Irish Catholic experience. Beginning with Patrick Kennedy's arrival in the Brahmin world of Boston in 1848, Maier delves into the deeper currents of the often spectacular Kennedy story, and the ways in which their immigrant background shaped their values-and in turn twentieth-century America-for over five generations. As the first and only Roman Catholic ever elected to high national office in this country, JFK's pioneering campaign for president rested on a tradition of navigating a cultural divide that began when Joseph Kennedy shed the brogues of the old country in order to get ahead on Wall Street. Whether studied exercise in cultural self-denial or sheer pragmatism, their movements mirror that of countless of other, albeit less storied, American families. But as much as the Kennedys distanced themselves from their religion and ethnic heritage on the public stage, Maier shows how Irish Catholicism informed many of their most well-known political decisions and stances. From their support of civil rights, to Joe Kennedy's tight relationship with Pope Pius XII and FDR, the impact of their personal family history on the national scene is without question-and makes for an immensely compelling narrative. Bringing together extensive new research in both Ireland and the United States, several exclusive interviews, as well as his own perspective as an Irish-American, Maier's original approach to the Kennedy era brilliantly illustrates the defining role of the immigrant experience for the country's foremost political dynasty.

The Edge of Home: Milton Acorn from the Island
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 192.07 $Widely acknowledged to be Prince Edward Island's greatest poet, Milton Acorn was born in Charlottetown in 1923 and died there in 1986. A significant contributor to the Canadian literary scene of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, he counted Al Purdy, Eli Mandel, Leonard Cohen, Irving Layton and Patrick Lane among his friends. The original "People's Poet," Acorn received a medal and cash prize from his peers at Toronto's Grossman's Tavern in 1970 when his selected poems, I've Tasted My Blood, failed to win the Governor General's Award. He went on to receive Canada's highest literary honour for The Island Means Minago, published in 1975. Acorn was the author of ten books of poetry, and, with Cedric Smith, he co-authored the play, The Road to Charlottetown. Although he lived in various Canadian cities between 1951 and 1981, Acorn's finely tuned homing instincts always brought him back to the Island. Now Anne Compton, another Island poet, brings us The Edge of Home: Milton Acorn from the Island, a collection of Acorn's poems written about, or rooted in, his home province. Selected from books published between 1956 and 1983, the sixty-two poems range in topic from nature and landscape to Island people and politics. Compton's critical essay, "The Ecological Poetics of Milton Acorn," shows how Acorn's Island infuses many of his finest poems.
