Er wurde von Dostojewski in Genf 1867 begonnen und in Mailand 1868 beendet und erschien von Januar 1868 bis Februar 1869 in der Zeitschrift Russki Westnik.Der junge Fürst Myschkin, Titelheld des Romans, kehrt nach einem jahrelangen Aufenthalt in einer Schweizer Heilanstalt nach Sankt Petersburg zurück. Er leidet an Epilepsie (wie auch Dostojewski selbst), ist zwar den Jahren nach erwachsen, gleicht aber in emotionaler Hinsicht einem unerfahrenen Kind.
