Born in Sonora in 1868 to a Mexican mother and a German father, Federico Ronstadt was the quintessential borderman. He came to Arizona Territory as a young man to learn a trade and eventually became an American citizen; but with many relatives on both sides of the border, Federico was equally at home in Mexico and in his adopted country. Writing proudly of his Mexican and American heritages, Ronstadt offers readers an extraordinary portrait of the Arizona-Mexico borderlands during the late nineteenth century. His memoirs provide a richness of detail and insight unmatched by traditional histories, relating such scenarios as the hardships of Yaqui hardrock miners working under primitive conditions, the travails of pearl divers in the Gulf of California, and the insurrection of Francisco Serna in 1875 Sonora. They also depict the simple activities of childhood, with its schooling and musical training, its games and mischief. Ronstadt relates his apprenticeship to a wagon- and carriage-maker in Tucson, recalling labor relations in the shop, the establishment of his own business, and the joys and anguish of his personal life. José María de Jesús Carvajal is both a biography of a Mexican postrevolutionary and a study of the development of a new border between Mexico and the United States during the crucial decades of the early to mid nineteenth century. The work examines the challenges faced by Carvajal, a bilingual, bicultural character in confusing times, against the historical backdrop of the history of colonial Texas and northern Mexico.Chance has chosen to focus on a political-military figure whose career stretches from the Texas Revolution to the French Intervention. Carvajal played a key role in the violent struggle between the liberal and conservative political factions that vied for control of the Republic of Mexico from 1830 to 1874. He was the leader of a mercenary army that invaded Mexico from the United States in 1851 in an unsuccessful attempt for the creation of the so-called independent Republic of the Sierra Madre. In addition, he played significant roles in the struggle for Texas Independence and formation of the ill-fated Republic of the Rio Grande; and he opposed the American occupation of northern Mexico during the Mexican-American War, the War of Reform that solidified liberal control of Mexico under the leadership of Benito Juarez, and the French Intervention into Mexico. Carvajal’s life and exploits have been largely overlooked by contemporary historians. This work sheds new light on several important chapters in the history of Texas and northern Mexico.

Bancroft and his assistants set out to record the memoirs of early Californios, one of them being eighty-three-year-old Don José María Amador, a former “Forty-Niner” during the California Gold Rush and soldado de cuera at the Presidio of San Francisco. Amador tells of reconnoitering expeditions into the interior of California, where he encountered local indigenous populations. He speaks of political events of Mexican California and the widespread confiscation of the Californios’ goods, livestock, and properties when the United States took control. A friend from Mission Santa Cruz, Lorenzo Asisara, also describes the harsh life and mistreatment the Indians faced from the priests.Both the Amador and Asisara narratives were used as sources in Bancroft’s writing but never published themselves. Gregorio Mora-Torres has now rescued them from obscurity and presents their voices in English translation (with annotations) and in the original Spanish on facing pages. This bilingual edition will be of great interest to historians of the West, California, and Mexican American studies.

Este libro se puede considerar, además, como un ensayo de Mora, en el que junto a su claro deseo de explicar la Constitución de 1824 al mayor número de lectores, se aprecia con nitidez el deseo de dotar a la joven república de México de un orden racional y justo, en medio del enorme caos político, económico y social que acompañó su nacimiento y construcción como nación.

La prolífica y multifacética obra de José María Samper jugó un papel fundacional dentro del proceso de construcción de la nación a lo largo de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. La importancia de la producción de Samper siempre ha sido reconocida y elogiada de manera casi ritual tanto desde la crítica literaria como desde las ciencias sociales, pero solo muy estrechos segmentos de ella, sin embargo, han sido objeto de reflexión. Si bien aquí no se los ignora, se relativiza el espacio que ocupan dentro de la totalidad del proyecto intelectual del autor, proyecto cuya complejidad, tal vez inadvertidamente, ha tendido a perderse de vista. Este estudio propone, desde una perspectiva interdisciplinaria, una relectura radical de la obra de Samper que trasciende las barreras temáticas y genéricas que han venido limitando la investigación sobre la misma. La relectura de los textos de Samper que aquí se ofrece, se plantea a la par con un cuestionamiento de los abordajes metodológicos y de las rígidas tradiciones mono-disciplinares que han dominado la bibliografía sobre el autor y sobre la producción textual decimonónica dentro del campo de los estudios colombianistas. Se aspira a que esta doble perspectiva abra la posibilidad de acercarse de nuevas maneras no solo al proyecto intelectual de Samper, sino a la escritura decimonónica nacional en general.
