Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 77.65 $Two years have passed since the events of the Order of the Scales. Across the realms, dragons are still hatching. Hatching, and hatching free. Skorl is an Ember, a soldier trained from birth to fight dragons. He is a living weapon, one-shot only, saturated with enough dragon-poison to bring down a monster all on his own. Misanthrope, violent and a drunk, to fulfil his purpose and slay a dragon, means to be eaten. Now Skorl has a choice: he can hang for his crimes, or he can go with the last of the Adamantine Men, fighting against an enemy he was born to face. Rat is an Outsider. He's on the run and he's stumbled onto something that's going to make him rich beyond all his dreams. It's just a shame that the end of the world has started without him. Re-Imagining the Museum : Beyond the Mausoleum
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 62.26 $Re-Imagining the Museum presents new interpretations of museum history and contemporary museum practices. Through a range of case studies from the UK, North America and Australia, Andrea Witcomb moves away from the idea that museums are always 'conservative' to suggest they have a long history of engaging with popular culture and addressing a variety of audiences. She argues that museums are key mediators between high and popular culture and between government, media practitioners, cultural policy-makers and museums professionals. Analyzing links between museums and the media, looking at the role of museums in cities, and discussing the effects on museums of cultural policies, Re-Imagining the Museum presents a vital tool in the study of museum practice.

Western Digital Russia under Western Eyes: From the Bronze Horseman to the Lenin Mausoleum
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.00 $As the dust clears from the fall of Communism, will Western eyes see Russia, the unclaimed orphan of Western history or Russia as she truly is, a perplexing but undeniable member of the European family? A dazzling work of intellectual history by a world-renowned scholar, spanning the years from Peter the Great to the fall of the Soviet Union, this book gives us a clear and sweeping view of Russia not as an eternal barbarian menace but as an outermost, if laggard, member in the continuum of European nations. The Russian troika hurtles through these pages. The Spectre, modernity's belief in salvation by revolutionary ideology, haunts them. Alice's looking glass greets us at this turn and that. Throughout, Martin Malia's inspired use of these devices aptly conveys the surreality of the whole Soviet Russian phenomenon and the West's unbalanced perception of it. He shows us the usually distorted images and stereotypes that have dominated Western ideas about Russia since the eighteenth century. And once these emerge as projections of the West's own internal anxieties, he shifts his focus to the institutional structures and cultural forms Russia shares with her neighbors. Here modern Europe is depicted as an East-West cultural gradient in which the central and eastern portions respond to the Atlantic West's challenge in delayed and generally skewed fashion. Thus Russia, after two centuries of building then painfully liberalizing its Old Regime, in 1917 tried to leap to a socialism that would be more advanced and democratic than European capitalism. The result was a cruel caricature of European civilization, which mesmerized and polarized the West for most of this century. As the old East-West gradient reappears in genuinely modern guise, this brilliantly imaginative work shows us the reality that has for so long tantalized--and eluded--Western eyes.

Writing with the Words of Others
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.11 $Essays on the Poetry of Hans Magnus Enzensberger. In this study a considerable number of Enzensberger's most important poems are closely analyzed, including the texts that make up his major poetic cycles, "Mausoleum" (1975) and "Der Untergang der Titanic" (1978). Central to any discussion of this highly diverse corpus is the way in which Enzensberger creates strikingly original poems on the basis of borrowed material. The appropriation of documentary material also plays an important role in the series of poems devoted to nature or science, many of which present themselves as riddles. The various personages portrayed in "Mausoleum" comprise not only scientists, inventors, explorers, and thinkers who were responsible for truly world-changing discoveries, but also a whole series of historical figures whose admission to this oddball pantheon is best explained by the bizarreness of their often utopian projects or by their compulsive or megalomaniacal personalities. The author's reading of this collection demonstrates Enzensberger's willingness to undermine seriousness with irony and humor. The final chapter examines the relation between poetry and politics and examines the notorious essay "Gemeinplätze, die Neueste Literatur betreffend" (1968) as well as the disturbing interview with the "Weimarer Beiträge" (1971), in which the poet expresses his thankfully short-lived rejection of literature as art and his desire to break out of the 'Ghetto des Kulturlebens'. Other chapters focus on the poet's taste for anachronism, his 'asynchronous' sensibility, and the recurrent theme of disappearance. 271 Seiten, broschiert (Königshausen & Neumann 2010) leichte Lagerspuren/minor shelfwear.
