Take a Picture of Me, James Van Der Zee!
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 35.00 $James Van Der Zee was just a young boy when he saved enough money to buy his first camera. He took photos of his family, classmates, and anyone who would sit still for a portrait. By the fifth grade, James was the school photographer and unofficial town photographer. Eventually he outgrew his small town and moved to the exciting, fast-paced world of New York City. After being told by his boss that no one would want his or her photo taken -by a black man, - James opened his own portrait studio in Harlem. He took photographs of legendary figures of the Harlem Renaissance--politicians such as Marcus Garvey, performers including Florence Mills, Bill -Bojangles- Robinson, and Mamie Smith--and ordinary folks in the neighborhood too. Everyone wanted fancy portraits by James Van Der Zee. Winner of Lee & Low's New Voices Award, Take a Picture of Me, James Van Der Zee! tells the story of a groundbreaking artist who chronicled an important era in Harlem and showed the beauty and pride of its people.

Mies van der Rohe: Critical Essays
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 44.32 $Essays by Wolf Tegethoff, Richard Pommer, and Fritz Neumeyer. Interview with James Ingo Freed. The rich legacy of scholarly and critical reassessments of Mies van der Rohe continues to grow since his centenary in 1986. This book which had its origins in the historic centennial exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, presents four provocative new writings on Mies augmented by 150 illustrations from MOMA's Mies van der Rohe Archive and other sources. In his insightful introduction, Franz Schulze, author of the acclaimed Mies van der Rohe: A Critical Biography, discusses the reasons why Mies's art and name evokes such a different response today and compares Mies to Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier in terms of critical fortune. Wolf Tegethoff traces the maturation of Mies's thought during the 1920s, bringing fascinating new research to his examination of this complex European period. Art historian Richard Pommer examines Mies's political ideology and those of other artists of the modern movement in the Weimar years and the first years of the Third Reich. Fritz Neumeyer addresses the issues of tradition and modernity in Mies's life's work through a detailed analysis of several of his earliest buildings. In the concluding piece, architect James Ingo Freed, who studied under Mies at the Illinois Institute of Technology and succeeded him as director of ITT, offers penetrating comments on Mies as an educator and as an architect during his American years. Franz Schulze is Hollender Professor of Art at Lake Forest College. Wolf Tegethoff is Professor at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich. Richard Pommer is Professor of Art History at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts. Fritz Neumeyer is Professor of Architectural Theory at the Technical University, Berlin. James Ingo Freed is a partner in the architectural firm I.M. Pei & Partners. Distributed for the Museum of Modern Art.

A. James Speyer Format: Paperback
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 31.33 $In 1938 James Speyer departed Harvard's School of Design in order to become Mies van der Rohe's first American graduate student at the Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago. During the 40s and 50s he taught architecture under Mies while at the same time, as an architect in his own right, he completed houses in Chicago and Pittsburgh that represented the cutting edge of new glass-and-steel design. In 1957 Speyer traveled to Greece on a Fulbright fellowship, where he taught at the Polytechneon in Athens; upon returning to America, he became Curator of Twentieth Century Painting and Sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago. He held this position for the next twenty-five years, and his tenure witnessed over 125 exhibitions and a remarkable expansion to the Institute's permanent collection. This volume includes a biographical essay by Franz Schulze and six accounts from Speyer's friends and colleagues who remember different aspects of his life and work.
