Reise Durch Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Englische Ausgabe
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.74 $Endless tree-lined roads, tranquil lakes, and a unique coastal landscape are captured in this striking travel companion, illustrating why Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is one of the most popular travel destinations in Germany. Showcasing the chalk cliffs of Rügen, the seaside resorts of Usedom, and the intactness of nature on the peninsula of Fischland, this guide also ventures inland, exploring the Mecklenburg Lakeland’s green meadows, broad fields, and forest-covered hills, offering diverse landscapes interspersed with historic buildings and significant artworks. The history of the Hanseatic League is depicted in the old trading cities of Stralsund, Wismar, Rostock, and Greifswald, their cityscapes shining in new splendor. Castles and places built during the Renaissance and in the 16th and 17th centuries testify to the wealth of those times, portrayed in an array of images along with the first seaside resort established in the late 18th century in Heiligendamm. Presenting Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in all its diversity, this guide also contains four additional features, shedding light on famous artists Casper David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge, and Ernst Barlach; the region’s many writers such as Ernst-Moritz Arndt, Hans Fallada, and Walter Kempowski; the history of the Baltic seaside resorts; and the legendary pirate Klaus Störtebeker.

The Rea Families of Mecklenburg County North Carolina
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 45.37 $This book is the story of the Rea family that came to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina in 1763 and 1764 after the end of the French and Indian War. For 250 years the family has grown and flourished in-this same area that was settled by our ancestors. As new land to the west was opened up for settlement, many left to take part in the westward migration. Over a period of years the old family ties were broken and other generations did not know that they ever existed. This book was written to tell the story of our history to our new generations and to give them a sense of ownership in that heritage. For the descendants of those that moved west, it is written to encourage you to re-discover your North Carolina roots and to be aware of the history that is yours.

Charlotte and the American Revolution:: Reverend Alexander Craighead, the Mecklenburg Declaration and the Foothills Fight for Independence (Military)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.05 $Charlotte was a hotbed of Revolutionary activity well before the fervency of revolt reached its boiling point in New England. Considered a wild frontier region at the time, Mecklenburg County welcomed the Reverend Alexander Craighead with ready hands for battle. Craighead's fiery rhetoric inspired the people of the region to action. What resulted was the creation of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, the first such document in the nation, and although the county had less than 3 percent of the colony's population, its Patriots accounted for over one-quarter of North Carolina's Revolutionary troops. Join author Richard P. Plumer as he reveals how the Queen City played an integral role in the formation of a proud and free America.

Thriving in the Shadows: The Black Experience in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 98.66 $The journey of African-Americans in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, is remarkable for its legacy of triumph over adversity, tenacity amid trials, and joy for life even as "second-class citizens." After the Civil War, the slave system was quickly replaced by Jim Crow laws and segregation, confining blacks to a specific place in society and putting limits on how much they could progress. But instead of despairing, blacks in Mecklenburg County carved out shadow communities that were a source of pride and provided opportunities that led to amazing accomplishments. From the black neighborhoods and institutions emerged civic and political leaders. During the era of civil-rights struggles, these remarkable individuals helped topple the longstanding laws of segregation that separated the races and limited opportunity for blacks in the region and beyond. These stories, many told in the voices of those who lived them, provide insight into how Charlotte and Mecklenburg County evolved and the contributions blacks made to the area's prosperity and growth. They also illuminate present-day issues of race, class, and politics. This rich, vibrant culture lives on in memories, and in the remarkable archival and family photographs showcased in the book.

The First American Declaration of Independence?: The Disputed History of the Mecklenburg Declaration of May 20, 1775
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 37.49 $This is a comprehensive history of one of the greatest mysteries in American history--did Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, declare independence from Great Britain more than a year before anyone else? According to local legend, on May 20, 1775, in a log court house in the remote backcountry two dozen local militia leaders met to discuss the deteriorating state of affairs in the American colonies. As they met, a horseman arrived bringing news of the battles of Lexington and Concord. Enraged, they unanimously declared Mecklenburg County "free and independent" from Great Britain. It was known as the "Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence" ("MecDec" for short). A local tavern owner named James Jack delivered the MecDec to the Continental Congress, who found it "premature." All of this occurred more than a year before the national Declaration of Independence. But is the story true? The evidence is mixed. John Adams believed the MecDec represented "the genuine sense of America" while Thomas Jefferson believed the story was "spurious." This book sets out all of the evidence, pro and con.
