Sir William Scott, Lord Stowell: Judge of the High Court of Admiralty, 1798–1828 (Cambridge Studies in English Legal History)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 47.15 $Sir William Scott's thirty years as judge of the High Court of Admiralty provide the basis of his reputation as the greatest of civilian (as opposed to common) lawyers. In this major study, the first for over seventy years, Professor Bourguignon analyzes his work as judge of the admiralty court in the light of the little-known, unpublished body of law which had been developed prior to his appointment. His term of office coincided with the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, and thus Scott had to bear and determine hundreds of cases involving the capture of vessels in time of war. These prize cases provided Scott with the opportunity to state and develop many aspects of the international law of war, especially the law of neutral and belligerent rights at sea. He also influenced the development of admiralty law in the cases, which he heard of private disputes concerning maritime commerce.

William Scott (Hardcover)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.49 $This book is a comprehensive introduction to the life and work of the important British abstract painter William Scott (1913–1989). After studying at Belfast College of Art and the Royal Academy of Arts in London, Scott began his painting career in 1946 while teaching at Bath Academy of Art, concentrating on still lifes of household objects. By 1951, the forms had begun to take on a life of their own, sometimes as metaphors of erotic encounters between male and female. Moving back and forth between abstract and representational styles, Scott gained international renown and has been the subject of exhibitions around the world, including a major retrospective at Tate in 1972.

Understanding Dante (William and Katherine Devers Series in Dante and Medieval Italian Literature)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 49.79 $“Dante and Shakespeare divide the modern world between them; there is no third.” Understanding Dante attempts to explain and justify T. S. Eliot’s bold claim. John Scott offers readers at all levels a critical overview of Dante’s writings: five chapters deal with his New Life of love and poetry (Vita Nova), the Banquet of knowledge (Convivio), his Latin treatise on language and poetics (De Vulgari Eloquentia), Italian lyrics (Rime), and his blueprint for world government (Monarchia). The next five chapters concentrate on Dante’s masterpiece, the Comedy: its structure, Dante’s worldview (still relevant today), and the Comedy examined as a poem. Much has been written on Dante’s moral, political, and religious ideas; important as these are, however, such discussions are perforce limited. It is above all as a work of poetry that the Divine Comedy maintains its appeal and fascination to readers of all backgrounds and beliefs. /// Firmly grounded in the latest advances of Dante scholarship, Understanding Dante offers an original and uniquely detailed, global analysis of Dante as poet of the Comedy that will be welcomed by those who read the poem in translation as well as by those who study the original Italian text. At the same time, Scott’s book will be welcome for its rich and insightful analysis of the whole corpus of Dante’s writings, as well as Scott’s mastery of the vast sea of critical literature in various languages. Scott bridges the gap that often exists between Dante studies in English-speaking countries and the great tradition of Dante scholarship in the poet’s homeland. No work in English about the great Italian poet can rival Understanding Dante’s scope in both depth and breadth of close reading and critical vision.

The Difference: How the Power of Diversity Creates Better Groups, Firms, Schools, and Societies (The William G. Bowen Series, 45)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 37.28 $In this landmark book, Scott Page redefines the way we understand ourselves in relation to one another. The Difference is about how we think in groups--and how our collective wisdom exceeds the sum of its parts. Why can teams of people find better solutions than brilliant individuals working alone? And why are the best group decisions and predictions those that draw upon the very qualities that make each of us unique? The answers lie in diversity--not what we look like outside, but what we look like within, our distinct tools and abilities. The Difference reveals that progress and innovation may depend less on lone thinkers with enormous IQs than on diverse people working together and capitalizing on their individuality. Page shows how groups that display a range of perspectives outperform groups of like-minded experts. Diversity yields superior outcomes, and Page proves it using his own cutting-edge research. Moving beyond the politics that cloud standard debates about diversity, he explains why difference beats out homogeneity, whether you're talking about citizens in a democracy or scientists in the laboratory. He examines practical ways to apply diversity's logic to a host of problems, and along the way offers fascinating and surprising examples, from the redesign of the Chicago "El" to the truth about where we store our ketchup.Page changes the way we understand diversity--how to harness its untapped potential, how to understand and avoid its traps, and how we can leverage our differences for the benefit of all.

William Speirs Bruce: Forgotten Polar Hero
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 55.61 $Bruce led the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition (1902-1904) as well as participating in or leading, many other polar expeditions from 1892 through to 1919. But he is now largely forgotten compared with Shackleton, Scott and Amundsen. In this book, expert authors return to primary sources to provide a new and controversial view of the relationship between Bruce and the then President of the Royal Geographical Society, Sir Clements Markham, and also draw new conclusions about Bruce’s personality, in particular suggesting that he was probably on the autism spectrum. Bruce was ahead of his time in dreaming of cooperating meteorological stations in the South, he can be considered the Father of Meteorology in the South Atlantic, and he had a lasting impact, publishing his work, under great difficulties, in six scientific volumes.

The Grapevine of the Black South: The Scott Newspaper Syndicate in the Generation before the Civil Rights Movement (Print Culture in the South Ser.)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 34.87 $In the summer of 1928, William Alexander Scott began a small four-page weekly with the help of his brother Cornelius. In 1930 his Atlanta World became a semiweekly, and the following year W. A. began to implement his vision for a massive newspaper chain based out of Atlanta: the Southern Newspaper Syndicate, later dubbed the Scott Newspaper Syndicate. In April 1931 the World had become a triweekly, and its reach began drifting beyond the South. With The Grapevine of the Black South, Thomas Aiello offers the first critical history of this influential newspaper syndicate, from its roots in the 1930s through its end in the 1950s. At its heyday, more than 240 papers were associated with the Syndicate, making it one of the biggest organs of the black press during the period leading up to the classic civil rights era (1955–68).In the generation that followed, the Syndicate helped formalize knowledge among the African American population in the South. As the civil rights movement exploded throughout the region, black southerners found a collective identity in that struggle built on the commonality of the news and the subsequent interpretation of that news. Or as Gunnar Myrdal explained, the press was “the chief agency of group control. It [told] the individual how he should think and feel as an American Negro and create[d] a tremendous power of suggestion by implying that all other Negroes think and feel in this manner.” It didn’t create a complete homogeneity in black southern thinking, but it gave thinkers a similar set of tools from which to draw.
