The Danzig Mennonite Church: Its Origin and History from 1569-1919
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 58.04 $This volume was originally published in 1919 in Germany for two reasons. One was the desire to reflect on three hundred fifty years of congregational history, going all the way back to the initial leadership provided by Dirk Philips, one of Menno Simons' most important co-workers. Celebrating the centennial of the congregation's church building, which stands to this day in Gdańsk, Poland, was the second reason. The author, Hermann Gottlieb Mannhardt, served the congregation as pastor from 1878 to 1927 and was an important leader of the German Mennonite church. Mannhardt's account is important to German history for providing a perspective from the margins of society on the perennial questions of religion, class, and national identity. The triangulation of guild masters, Mennonite artisans and merchants outside the city walls, and the ruling patrician families illuminates how religious and economic interests fed off each other in early modern Danzig. This history also demonstrates the transformation of European society from one that derived status from birth and tradition to one that based status on merit as well as equal rights and equal duties. Mannhardt portrayed Mennonites as courageous outsiders initially and ended with them as valued, if still slightly eccentric, insiders, fitting the liberal expectation that the price of admission to modern, democratic society is checking one's religious commitments at the door of the public sphere. Special features of this translation include an epilogue by Pastor Tomasz Ropiejko, lead pastor of the Pentecostal congregation that has used the former Mennonite church building in Gdańsk since the 1950s. Original maps make the streets and villages of Mannhardt's account easy to locate. Editorial annotations to the original text explain passages that might otherwise remain obscure and highlight as well the places where Mannhardt's nineteenth-century perspectives shaped his interpretations.

Early Dutch Maritime Cartography: The North Holland School of Cartography (c. 1580-c. 1620)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 272.08 $Winner of the 2019 Menno Hertzberger Prize for Book History and BibliographyThis book is an exposition of an important, yet previously unknown chapter in the history of Dutch maritime cartography. While Amsterdam was developing into Europe's most vital commercial hub in the seventeenth century, demanding and controlling the production of maps and sea-charts, a major School of Cartography was already flourishing in the so-called 'Kop van Noord-Holland' region just north of Amsterdam. This School specialised in the production of small-scale charts of larger areas, including the European coastlines and the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Its masters used to call themselves 'caert-schrijvers' or 'map-scribes' when clarifying their profession. The cities of Enkhuizen and Edam were important trading ports and as such provided an ideal environment for developing into centres of cartography, serving sea-borne navigation. Apart from the well-known printed pilot guides by Lucas Jansz Waghenaer, the output of these 'caert-schrijvers' consists mainly of manuscript charts on vellum. Copies, though few they are, nowadays can be found across the globe. Sea-charts provided invaluable on-board navigation assistance to ship captains. However, another surprising contemporaneous purpose for financing these charts become popular. Rich ship owners and merchants would commission new charts to serve as wall-decoration as well as a reference point for their maritime-related conversations. They feature a decorative lay-out filled with magnificent colours. Moreover, many of these charts are embellished with miniature paintings, certainly making them some of the most beautiful exemplars ever produced by Dutch cartography during its Golden Age.

Erasmus, the Anabaptists, and the Great Commission
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 75.11 $Many scholars have pointed to the influence of Erasmus on the early Swiss Anabaptists and Menno Simons. Yet the truth of this contention has never been firmly established. This volume uses new research data and argumentation to build a more convincing case for the early Anabaptist movement's dependence on Erasmus's thought.Abraham Friesen first surveys the various ways Anabaptist history has been interpreted. He then discusses the state of scholarship regarding the relationship of Erasmus to the Anabaptists and suggests a new approach to the question. In the main body of the text, Friesen traces the intellectual origins of both Swiss Anabaptism and Menno Simons to the writings of Erasmus -- especially to Erasmus's unique interpretation of Christ's Great Commission as presented in his famous paraphrases of Matthew and Acts -- and shows the impact that this interpretation ultimately had on the form and content of Anabaptist thought.
