Despite their independence, cats have enjoyed (one hopes) a relationship with humans that has lasted for thousands of years. Literally millions of cats were mummified in Egypt while excavations of Neolithic sites in the Near East have uncovered many cat burials. Erhard Osser's study draws on archaeological, artistic, literary and historical evidence to survey the history of the man's friendship with the cat through the millennia, whilst also tracing changes in the symbolism of the cat which has often been positive but has also been negative. Following a discussion of Victoria attitudes towards the cat, the book goes back to ancient Egypt and traces te history of the relationship through antiquity to more recent centuries when, for a time, cats and witchcraft became inseperable. The reasons behind superstitions, such as the Black Cat and the nine lives are also discussed, as is the contribution cats made to the control of urban rat populations and, therefore, to human health.
