A Modern Mephistopheles, and A Whisper in the Dark
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.26 $First published in 1889, this volume contains Louisa May Alcott's short stories "A Modern Mephistopheles" and "A Whisper in the Dark". Although best known for her children's classics, Alcott also wrote many "blood and thunder" stories in her early years. Her favourite of these was "A Modern Mephistopheles", a story of human evil and its appalling consequences that centres around Felix Canaris, a failing writer whose suicide attempt is interrupted by a fateful knock at the door. These chilling tales of lust, deception, and greed are highly recommended for short story lovers and are not to be missed by fans of macabre literature. Louisa May Alcott (1832 - 1888) was an American short story writer, novelist, and poet most famous for writing the novel "Little Women", as well as its sequels "Little Men" and "Jo's Boys". She grew up in New England and became associated with numerous notable intellectuals of her time, including Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Henry David Thoreau. Other notable works by this author include: "An Old-Fashioned Girl" (1886), "Eight Cousins" (1869), and "A Long Fatal Love Chase" (1875). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. The Prince of Darkness: Radical Evil and the Power of Good in History
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.42 $The Devil, Satan, Lucifer, Mephistopheles - throughout history the Prince of Darkness, the Western world's most powerful symbol of evil, has taken many names and shapes. Jeffrey Burton Russell here chronicles the remarkable story of the Devil from antiquity to the present. While recounting how past generations have personified evil, he deepens our understanding of the ways in which people have dealt with the enduring problem of radical evil. After a compelling essay on the nature of evil, Russell uncovers the origins of the concept of the Devil in various early cultures and then traces its evolution in Western thought from the time of the ancient Hebrews through the first centuries of the Christian era. Next he turns to the medieval view of the Devil, focusing on images found in folklore, scholastic thought, art, literature, mysticism, and witchcraft. Finally, he follows the Devil into our own era, where he draws on examples from theology, philosophy, art, literature, and popular culture to describe the great changes in this traditional notion of evil brought about by the intellectual and cultural developments of modern times. Is the Devil an outmoded superstition, as most educated people today believe? Or do the horrors of the twentieth century and the specter of nuclear war make all too clear the continuing need for some vital symbol of radical evil? A single-volume distillation of Russell's epic tetralogy on the nature and personifcation of evil from ancient times to the present (published by Cornell University Press between 1977 and 1986), The Prince of Darkness invites readers to confront these and other critical questions as they explore the past faces of that figure who has been called the second most famous personage in Christianity.

Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 59.00 $The last Millennial contest--between the forces of Good and Evil for control of the universe--didn't work out quite so well for Evil and its rooters. Goethe's Faust, Part 1: An English Translation
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 97.04 $This is not a modern reprint, print-on-demand or facsimile copy. It is a hardcover book published with a dust jacket price of $15.00 in 1976 as a First Printing by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New York. Faust Part One takes place in multiple settings, the first of which is Heaven. The demon Mephistopheles makes a bet with God: he says that he can lure God's favourite human being (Faust), who is striving to learn everything that can be known, away from righteous pursuits. The next scene takes place in Faust's study where Faust, despairing at the vanity of scientific, humanitarian and religious learning, turns to magic for the showering of infinite knowledge. He suspects, however, that his attempts are failing. Frustrated, he ponders suicide, but rejects it as he hears the echo of nearby Easter celebrations begin. He goes for a walk with his assistant Wagner and is followed home by a dog. In Faust's study, the dog transforms into Mephistopheles. Faust makes an arrangement with him: Mephistopheles will do everything that Faust wants while he is here on Earth, and in exchange Faust will serve the Devil in Hell. The translator, Randall Jarrell (1914 -1965) was an American poet, literary critic, children's author, essayist, and novelist. He was the 11th Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress-a position that now bears the title Poet Laureate of the United States. Among other honors, Jarrell was awarded the National Book Award for Poetry, in 1961.
