The Jew is Not My Enemy: Unveiling the Myths that Fuel Muslim Anti-Semitism
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 64.00 $A liberal Muslim and critically acclaimed author explores the historical, political, and theological basis for centuries of Muslim animosity towards Jews, debunking long-held myths and tracing a history of hate and its impact today.More than nine years after 9/11 and 60 years after the creation of the state of Israel, the world is no closer to solving, let alone understanding, the psychological and political divide between Jews and Muslims. While countless books have been written on the subject of terrorism, political Islam, and jihad, barely a handful address the theological and historical basis of the Jew—Muslim divide. Following the terrorist attacks on Mumbai in November 2008, in which Pakistani jihadis sought out and murdered the members of a local Jewish centre, Tarek Fatah began an in-depth investigation of the historical basis for the crime. In this provocative new book, Fatah uses extensive research to trace how literature from as early as the seventh century has fueled the hatred of Jews by Muslims. Fatah debunks the anti-Jewish writings of the Hadith literature, takes apart the Arab supremacist doctrines that lend fuel to the fire, and reinterprets supposed anti-Jewish passages in the Quran. In doing so he argues that hating Jews is against the essence of the Islamic spirit and suggests what needs to be done to eliminate the agonizing friction between the two communities.

Earned in Blood: My Journey from Old-Breed Marine to the Most Dangerous Job in America Miller, Thurman and Frank, Richard
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.05 $Born in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia in 1919, Thurman Miller was the sixteenth of eighteen children in a family so poor, the local coal miner's kids looked down on them. His father was a subsistence farmer and it was rare for the Miller family to have enough food for everyone. But for Thurman, Appalachia was not just a region: it was a culture, a frame of mind, a being. Fighting, playing, and hiding in the hills would soon serve him well. In 1940 he enlisted and served in World War II with the legendary unit K-3-5 of the First Marine Division. He was involved in some of the most horrific and famous battles in the Pacific Theater, including Guadalcanal and New Britain, where as Gunny Sergeant he sent men to their deaths and narrowly escaped it himself. From harrowing battlefield experiences to the loss of comrades, his powerful combat experiences would stay with him forever. Upon returning stateside, he taught at the prestigious Officer Candidate School at Camp Lejeune, preparing young officers for the horrific battles to come on Okinawa and Iwo Jima. After the war, suffering badly from the malaria and other diseases he contracted in the Pacific and unable to find work, Miller took a job in the coal mines in his home state of West Virginia, where he toiled in darkness for thirty-seven years. The blackness of the mines fed the terrors he lived with since the battlefield and the backbreaking labor ate away at his already compromised body. Bowed but unbroken, Miller survived because of his strength and lifelong devotion to his beloved wife of sixty-five years―a relationship that shines brightly in this distinctly American journey. With uncommon wisdom, intelligence, and humility, this member of the Greatest Generation spins a gripping tale through peace and war, work and family, love and redemption across ten tumultuous decades.

Kuniyoshi: From the Arthur R. Miller Collection
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 59.27 $Having seen the show at Japan Society NYC, I can say that this book captures the essence and more. It's a huge catalog and high quality. Great reference and/or coffee table book. Color reproduction is excellent. My only complaint is minor: I felt that the book could have been the same size as the actual woodblock prints. As it is, the scans are smaller than the originals and the details are much larger. I imagine that it may have been too heavy and cost prohibitive to make it actual size. A few select fold-outs of the triptychs would have been nice as well! Also check out the hi-res digital prints from the show available through Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Highly recommended.

Biography and Poetical Remains of the Late Margaret Miller Davidson
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.65 $Excerpt from Biography and Poetical Remains of the Late Margaret Miller DavidsonAn intimate acquaintance in early life with some of the relatives of Miss Davidson had caused me, while in Europe, to read with great interest every thing concerning her; when, therefore, in 1833, about a year aller my return to the United States, I was told, while in New York, that Mrs. Davidson, the mother of the deceased, was in the city and desirous of consulting me about a new edition of her daughter's works, I lost no time in waiting upon her. Her appearance corresponded with the interesting idea given of her in her daughter's biog raphy; she was feeble and emaciated, and supported by pillows in an easy chair, but there were the lungerings of grace and beauty in her form and features, and her eye still gleamed with intelligence and sensibility.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
