1791: Mozart's Last Year
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 41.56 $The last month of the year 1791 witnessed what H.C. Robbins Landon calls "the greatest tragedy in the history of music": the premature death of the thirty-five-year-old Mozart. Surrounded by enigma and intrigue, allegations of poisoning, and sexual scandal, this event continues to grip the popular imagination today--as was demonstrated by the astonishing success of the play and movie Amadeus. Curious and controversial as the circumstances of Mozart's death are, the truth has been obscured by accumulated layers of mythology. Drawing on his unrivaled knowledge of the sources, Professor Landon cuts through fantasy and mystification to present the facts--including a substantial amount of unpublished information--and reconstruct the moving story of the last year of Mozart's life. The composition of such works as the Requiem and the operas The Magic Flute and La clemenza di Tito is discussed in detail, and new light is thrown on Mozart's relations with the Freemasons and with Salieri, among others. One of the world's leading musicologists, H.C. Robbins Landon is justly renowned for his rare ability to communicate the excitement of discovery. This is a major contribution to the literature of Mozart.

Symphony No. 4 in C Minor, D417 ("Tragic")
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.08 $Among his most popular compositions, Schubert's Fourth Symphony is especially known for the grave beauty of its slow movement. And, like many of his early works, the Fourth contains traces of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Rossini. Poetically conceived and subjectively emotional in the romantic manner, however, the symphony also possesses an individuality which is pure Schubert.

Klavierkonzert c-moll KV 491
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 29.36 $According to Mozart's own catalogue, K. 491 was completed on 24 March 1786 - it was Mozart's only piano concerto aside from K. 466 that was in a minor key. It was probably first performed two weeks later as part of an "academy" at the Burgtheater in Vienna. Mozart was extremely pressed for time while composing this work, a fact that is shown both by the cursory way in which the autograph was written and by the repeated corrections. Unlike earlier publications, our edition contains the definitive version as in Mozart's manuscript. The piano reduction of our edition was undertaken by the celebrated pianist András Schiff, to whom we also already owe our reductions of the concertos K. 453, 467, 488 and 503 (HN 765, 766, 767 and 825). He also supplied the fingerings for the solo part, the cadenzas and the lead-ins.

Source Rdgs Rev V5 Late 18th C
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 43.78 $In The Late Eighteenth Century, Wye Jamison Allanbrook presents twenty-six readings that reveal how the music establishment of 1750-1800 saw itself. The era of Haydn, Mozart, and early Beethoven not only produced music of enduring appeal, it also gave us significant writings that explain how music should be composed, performed, listened to, and understood. Included are selections from the great German pedagogical treaties of Quantz (on playing the flute), C. P. E. Bach (keyboard), Leopold Mozart (violin), and Kirnberger and Koch (on composition); opinions about opera by Rousseau, Diderot, and Gluck; ideas on expression by W. A. Mozart and G. de Staël; and historical/descriptive writings of Forkel, Charles Burney, and Susannah Burney.

C.P.E. : A Listener's Guide to the Other Bach
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.08 $Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788) has to be the most rewarding, expressive, and entertaining of all the composers whose work fell into obscurity in the years following his death. He was overshadowed both by the rediscovery of his father, Johann Sebastian, and by the rise of the classical composers Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven in Vienna. In his lifetime, however, he was considered “the great Bach ” a musician of astonishing originality and a true original genius. His contemporaries were right.Because modern editions of C. P. E. Bach's music were few and far between, it has been difficult for performers and record collectors to assess and enjoy his achievement, but over the past two decades the situation has begun to improve. His output was vast: 52 keyboard concertos, a dozen and a half symphonies, hundreds of keyboard sonatas and character pieces, and a wealth of songs, choral music, and chamber works.Accompanied by a full-length Hänssler Classic CD of the composer's finest and most representative works, this survey offers a comprehensive overview of this magnificent, all-but-unknown body of music and makes the case for regarding C. P. E. as a true classic.
