A History of Pashtun Migration, 1775-Nichols, Robert
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 581.66 $For centuries Pashtuns from the Peshawar Valley and today's Pakistan-Afghan borderlands have circulated throughout the sub-continent and the Indian Ocean region. This interregional history of migration and mobility in the modern period from 1775 to 2006 follows Pashtun individuals and communities as they left homelands and responded to colonial and post-colonial opportunities and challenges in eighteenth century Rohilkhand, nineteenth century northern India and Hyderabad, Pakistan after 1947, and the Gulf region from the nineteenth century to the present. Pashtuns in permanent or temporary diaspora were transformed by the range of possible social consequences as they circulated in South Asia and the greater Indian Ocean region, variously experiencing degrees of assimilation, integration, sustained ethnic self-awareness, and, increasingly, notions of "national" identity. Pashtuns in home villages and in distant locations exhibited personal initiative and agency even as they were affected by wider European imperial policies, national and interregional political competition, and the evolving pressures of an expanding world economy. This work illuminates the history of Pashtuns and Pakistan and offers insight into how Asian regional populations have been integrated into, and often subordinated by, the dynamics of contemporary globalization.

Robert the Monk's History of the First Crusade: Historia Iherosolimitana (Crusade Texts in Translation)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.26 $This is the first English translation of Robert the Monk's Historia Iherosolimitana, a Latin prose chronicle describing the First Crusade. In addition to providing new and unique information on the Crusade (Robert claims to have been an eyewitness of the Council of Clermont in 1095), its particular interest lies in the great popularity it enjoyed in the Middle Ages. The text has close links with the vernacular literary tradition and is written in a racy style which would not disgrace a modern tabloid journalist. Its reflection of contemporary legends and anecdotes gives us insights into perceptions of the Crusade at that time and opens up interesting perspectives onto the relationship of history and fiction in the twelfth century. The introduction discusses what we know about Robert, his importance as a historical source and his place in the literary tradition of the First Crusade.

The Earliest Ships: The Evolution of Boats into Ships (Conway's History of the Ship) Gardiner, Robert
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 45.00 $This volume takes the development of the most primitive forms of boats - rafts, skin boats and dugouts, for example - which developed ultimately into ships for trade, commerce and war. It summarizes the current state of knowledge, and examines the nature of archaeological evidence. The earliest forms of water transport are to be discovered into the more complex plank boats of the Bronze Age, both in Northern Europe and in the Mediterranean. The recently discovered Dover Boat, for instance, represents a tradition of strong, seagoing vessels of some 60 feet in length. The later Celtic and Viking developments are covered, and the non-European traditions - essentially in Arabia and China up to the 16th century - are also described. In addition to this developmental history, subsidiary chapters analyze such related subjects as early pilotage, navigation and exploration, warfare and trade, and performance and sea-keeping. Incorporating the latest research, this book is a comprehensive introduction to the ships at the dawn of seafaring.

Glory, Trouble, and Renaissance at the Robert S. Peabody Museum of Archaeology (Critical Studies in the History of Anthropology)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.27 $Glory, Trouble, and Renaissance at the Robert S. Peabody Museum of Archaeology chronicles the seminal contributions, tumultuous history, and recent renaissance of the Robert S. Peabody Museum of Archaeology (RSPM). The only archaeology museum that is part of an American high school, it also did cutting-edge research from the 1930s through the 1970s, ultimately returning to its core mission of teaching and learning in the twenty-first century. Essays explore the early history and notable contributions of the museum’s directors and curators, including a tour de force chapter by James Richardson and J. M. Adovasio that interweaves the history of research at the museum with the intriguing story of the peopling of the Americas. Other chapters tackle the challenges of the 1990s, including shrinking financial resources, the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act and relationships with American Indian tribes, and the need to revisit the original mission of the museum, namely, to educate high school students. Like many cultural institutions, the RSPM has faced a host of challenges throughout its history. The contributors to this book describe the creative responses to those challenges and the reinvention of a museum with an unusual past, present, and future.

Figuring History: Robert Colescott, Kerry James Marshall, Mickalene Thomas [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.77 $Contemporary artists Robert Colescott (1925–2009), Kerry James Marshall (b. 1955), and Mickalene Thomas (b. 1971) are distinguished by their attention to a history of representation, which they re-visit and revise to reflect on individual and collective Black experience. Equally engaged with social and political histories, and the history of art, Colescott, Marshall, and Thomas have created works that at times poignantly and satirically critique dominant narratives and posit alternatives. By considering these artists together, this thought-provoking book expands our understanding of contemporary history painting, a genre first defined during the 17th century and known for didactic paintings that often depicted Biblical or mythological subjects, and expressed the tastes and narratives of a ruling class. Colescott, Marshall, and Thomas marry appreciation of these traditional forms of representation to a deep understanding of contemporary American culture to create insightful works that disrupt historic narratives and read canonic art history against the grain.

History's Apprentice: The Diaries of B. H. Roberts
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 85.00 $On 13 March 1882, a twenty-five-year-old from a small Utah town, serving an LDS mission in rural Tennessee, recorded the following plaintive confession: Perhaps one-half of my life has passed away--and what have I done? But little of anything, either of good or evil; my misdeeds are like my talents--on the small order. I have made attempts to accomplish something in various directions, but "miserable failure" is written across the face of each of them. ... I can but choose to regret the past when looking over it, but as I cannot call it back to amend it, or straighten out the crooks which appear in the path I have trod, I will look to the present and future, trying to profit by the experience of the past. ... The author of this diary entry was of course B. H. Roberts, who would become a household name in some circles and would live a remarkably full and productive life by anyone’s standard but his own. In the half century between March 1882 and Roberts’s death in September 1933, his achievements surpassed most mortals in areas of religion, politics, and scholarship. But he remained somewhat dissatisfied with himself and occasionally suffered bouts of depression. After his mission, Roberts cut his teeth as a writer and opinion maker at the Salt Lake Herald, followed by an assignment as editor of the church's overseas publication, the Millennial Star. Years later, his more mature histories and biographies received wide critical praise as definitive works of LDS history and apologetics. In fact, these studies are still read today and continue to be held in high esteem

Los Adaes, the First Capital of Spanish Texas (Summerfield G. Roberts Texas History Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 85.53 $In 1721, Spain established a fort and mission on the Texas-Louisiana border, or frontera, to stem the tide of people and goods flowing back and forth between northern New Spain and French Louisiana. Named in part after the indigenous Adai people, the complex of the presidio (Nuestra Señora del Pilar de los Adaes) and the mission (San Miguel de Cuellar de los Adaes) became collectively known as Los Adaes. It was the capital of Tejas for New Spain. In the first book devoted to Los Adaes, historian Francis X. Galan traces the roots of the current US-Mexico border to the colonial history of this all but forgotten Spanish fort and mission. He demonstrates that, despite efforts to the contrary, Spain could neither fully block the penetration of smuggled goods and settlers into Texas from Louisiana nor could it successfully convert the Native Americans to Christianity and the Spanish economic system. In the aftermath of the transfer of Louisiana from France to Spain in 1762, Spain chose to shutter the fort and mission. The settlers, or Adaeseños, were forced to march to San Antonio in 1773. Some returned to East Texas soon after to establish Nacogdoches. Others remained in San Antonio, the new capital of Spanish Texas, and settled on lands distributed from the secularized Mission San Antonio de Valero, a mission now widely known as the Alamo.Los Adaes, the First Capital of Spanish Texas makes a major contribution to Texas history by providing a richer perspective on the shifting borders of colonial powers.
