Der "kleinen" Grafenfamilie der Luxemburger, die ihren Besitz an der westlichen Reichsgrenze seit dem 10.Jahrhundert stetig zu vergrossern verstanden und meist engere Beziehungen zum Pariser Hof als zum deutschen Monarchen gepflegt hatte, entstammten mit Heinrich VII., Karl IV., Wenzel IV. und Sigismund vier Romische Konige. Nur dem alle ritterlichen Attribute seines Zeitalters verkorpernden Johann von Luxemburg blieb es verwehrt, neben der St.Wenzels- auch die Reichskrone zu erwerben. Erzbischof Balduin von Trier, der Bruder Kaiser Heinrichs VII., beeinflusste in der ersten Halfte des 14. Jahrhunderts wie kein anderer Kurfurst das Geschehen im Reich. Die Luxemburger lenkten zwischen 1308 und 1437 die Geschicke des Heiligen Romischen Reiches und kontrollierten schliesslich mit den Konigreichen Bohmen und Ungarn den grossten geschlossenen Landerkomplex im ostlichen Mitteleuropa. Obgleich sie die weitere Aushohlung der monarchischen Zentralgewalt nicht aufhalten konnten, gelang es ihnen immerhin, die Stellung des Reiches als massgebliche Macht in Mitteleuropa zu behaupten. Mit hoher Einsatzbereitschaft und beeindruckendem diplomatischem Geschick suchten sie den einschneidenden politischen, religiosen, geistig-kulturellen und wirtschaftlichen Umbruchen an der Schwelle zur Neuzeit gerecht zu werden. Mit ihrer zukunftstrachtigen dynastischen Politik schufen sie zudem die Voraussetzungen fur den Aufstieg des Hauses Habsburg zur dominierenden europaischen Grossmacht.
