The Image Revisited: Luc Tuymans in Conversation with Hans De Wolf, T.J. Clark & Gottfried Böhm
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.87 $At the age of 19, on a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest, a young Luc Tuymans saw the work of El Greco for the first time―an event that would lead him to become one of today’s most influential artists. Almost 40 years later, that life-changing experience is recounted and celebrated in The Image Revisited, a publication that acts as both a monograph and a history of art.Published to coincide with an exhibition of Baroque art curated by Tuymans at M HKA in Antwerp in June 2018, this richly illustrated book includes three conversations Tuymans conducted with art historians T.J. Clark, Hans Maria De Wolf, and Gottfried Böhm at museums in Basel, Brussels and Budapest over the course of three years. In the course of fascinating discussions on the work of artists such as El Greco, Cézanne, Goya, de la Tour, Titian, Courbet, Mantegna, Hopper, Newman and Richter, what emerges is an exceptional insight into Tuymans’ own creative process, and how the great art of the past has inspired and motivated him.

The Vietnam War Debate: Hans J. Morgenthau and the Attempt to Halt the Drift into Disaster
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 46.01 $This book tells the story of how America's national leadership failed the nation and produced the greatest foreign policy disaster in American history to that time. It is foremost, however, the story of a great man who tried to halt his nation's drift into what became an American tragedy. It is also a story that has never before been told. As the war escalated, a variety of critics emerged to challenge the war policy and thus my book is about the national debate in which University of Chicago Professor Hans J. Morgenthau emerged as the chief opponent of the war. Morgenthau argued relentlessly in teach-ins around the country, in public debates and in hundreds of articles that Vietnam was never a threat to America's security and that the war should never have been fought. In the history of the national debate on Vietnam, it is Morgenthau who is the hero of the anti-war movement and the centerpiece of my study. Morgenthau had written the basic text on foreign policy, Politics Among Nations, and had established the field of international relations as an independent discipline of study. His arguments against the war derive from these earliest writings and are elaborated in this book, the principles of which remain valid today. The war ended in 1975 as North Vietnamese troops marched into Saigon after over 58,000 American servicemen and millions of Vietnamese had died in the fighting. The war could have been averted, Morgenthau was ignored, American policy-makers misunderstood the nature of the civil conflict in Vietnam. As Morgenthau told an interviewer in July, 1965, "What I have said recently I have been saying for years, without anybody paying any attention."

Hans J. Wegner: Just One Good Chair
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 5.28 $The name of Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007) is inseparable from his unrivalled chairs, which have helped Danish design achieve international recognition. Any fan of design has his or her favorite among Wegner's approximately 500 creations, and there is hardly an interior design magazine that has not included an illustration of his elegant China Chair (1943) or Y Chair (1950). Even John F. Kennedy sat on the Round Chair, now known simply as The Chair (1949). Trained as a furniture maker, Wegner typically made his prototypes by hand, using traditional joinery techniques such as tongue-and-groove or finger joints. In the process, he often pushed the limitations of wood, giving his designs an unequaled elegance. Their beauty was matched by their practicality: he considered comfort and ergonomics to be equally as important as appearance. Despite his concern for functionality, his personality and sense of humor also shone through his works, as evidenced by his splendid Peacock Chair (1947) or the masculine Ox Chair (1960), available with or without horns.

Playing With Fire : The Controversial Career of Hans J. Eysenck
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 160.84 $Probably no other psychologist has aroused such contrary reactions from the public and from the scientific community as Hans Eysenck. To the public, he was some kind of noble "IQ warrior" or that disgraceful "race and IQ guy." However, Britain's most prominent post-war psychologist had a different but equally divisive reputation amongst his scientific peers. Here was an intellectual leader in personality psychology who was greatly admired by a host of sympathetic colleagues, yet repeatedly dismissed by his many critics as a self-serving show-pony and widely suspected of being economical with the truth. Hans Eysenck played it like a game and he played to win. In the process, he made many who crossed swords with him feel like losers. Though, while bold and innovative, Eysenck made his share of mistakes and embraced causes and collaborators that no one else would. Not since Sir Cyril Burt - Eysenck's mentor - has a UK-based psychologist left a legacy that will be so fiercely debated.Playing with Fire is a full-length biography of Eysenck's career. It looks to explain the contradictions in Eysenck's public and professional image, and how one fed the other. It documents his boyhood in Berlin and the origin of his key ideas about personality, learning and the biogenetics of behaviour. It looks at the many clashes he had with any number of opponents - psychoanalysts, liberal social psychologists and the anti-tobacco public health lobby, to name a few. This is a provocative book about a provocative man. It combines years of assiduous research and important insights from science and technology studies in a very readable, accessible narrative. Always comparing the self-constructed legend with historical reality, it charts the story of an inveterate controversialist - the man they loved to hate.

Hans Holbein d.J. : Tafelmaler in Basel 1515 - 1532. Jochen Sander [first edition]

Thomas Gray in Copenhagen - In Which the Philosopher Cat Meets the Ghost of Hans Christian Andersen
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 65.12 $A sequel to the widely successful Thomas Gray, Philosopher Cat, Philip J. Davis' latest continues the adventures of the internationally popular feline and friend. Could it be that Hans Christian Andersen - who wrote so lovingly of inchworms and ugly ducklings - was an unrepentant despiser of cats? That's the rumor that the philosophical feline, Thomas Gray, and cohort, Cambridge don Lucas Fysst, (whose last name doesn't rhyme with "fist") are determined to snuff out. In Copenhagen to attend a philosophers' convention, they go on the hunt for a missing Andersen manuscript that will set the record straight. A whimsically written and illustrated tale - part history, part parody, and all fun.Davis is Professor Emeritus of Applied Mathematics at Brown University and author of No Way: Essays on the Impossible.

Neurotica: The Darkest Art of J. K. Potter
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 78.64 $A spiritual descendant of such surrealist artists as Man Ray and Hans Bellmer, J. K. Potter is one of the most talented and disturbing fantasy and horror artists of our time. Combining art and photography, he creates stunning images with an intensely dark psychological vision that is as horrifying as it is beautiful. This new collection, his darkest yet, explores the artist's obsession with transformation and juxtaposition, often using the nude human body as his canvas.Fantasy, nightmares and madness hold a strong place in Potter's art as he explores the relationship of the body to our deepest obsessions and fears. 'Erotic distillations of human and animal physique' and 'interior deformities that manifest themselves in the exterior flesh' are major themes for J. K. Potter, who rearranges human form - sometimes morphing it with things animal, vegetable or mineral - to suit his unrivalled imagination.

The book of Lord Shang; a classic of the Chinese School of Law. Translated from the Chinese with introduction and notes by J.J.L. Duyvendak
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 26.00 $Reprint of Volume XVII in Probsthain's Oriental Series. Originally published: London: Arthur Probsthain, 1928. xiv, 346 pp. The Book of Lord Shang was probably compiled sometime between 359 and 338 BCE. Along with the Han Fei-Tzu, it is one of the two principal sources of Legalism, a school of Chinese political thought. Legalism asserts that human behavior must be controlled through written law rather than through ritual, custom or ethics because people are innately selfish and ignorant. The law is not effective when it is based on goodness or virtue; it is effective when it compels obedience. This is essential to preserve the stability of the State. Roscoe Pound recommended this book for the study of old Chinese law in Outlines of Lectures on Jurisprudence (5th ed.) 235. With a Chinese index and an index of names and references.
