Abstract Expressionism
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.15 $The ineffable language of paint Abstract expressionism—the non-representational use of paint as a means of personal expression—emerged in America in the 1940s, inspired by the innovative work of Arshile Gorky. Considered the first art movement originating in the Americas to have a worldwide influence, abstract expressionism spawned two very different sub-categories: action painting (exemplified by Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock) and color field painting, made most famous by Mark Rothko. Abstract expressionists strove to express emotions and ideas directly on canvas via color, form and texture—the quality of brushstrokes and other marks, the dripping of paint, for example—while embracing accident and chance, and celebrating the very act of painting. Featured artists: William Baziotes, Helen Frankenthaler, Arshile Gorky, Adolph Gottlieb, Philip Guston, Hans Hofmann, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko, David Smith, Theodoros Stamos, Clyfford Still, Mark Tobey, Bradley Walter Tomlin About the Series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Genre Series features: a detailed illustrated introduction plus a timeline of the most important political, cultural and social events that took place during that period a selection of the most important works of the epoch, each of which is presented on a 2-page spread with a full-page image and with an interpretation of the respective work, plus a portrait and brief biography of the artist approximately 100 colour illustrations with explanatory captions

Experiments in Modern Realism: World Making in Postwar European and American Art
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 78.94 $This major study offers a new understanding of the aesthetics and politics of postwar European and American art. Questioning the widespread assumption that the most innovative practices were non-representational, it shows how a powerful realist impulse operated alongside a strong commitment to abstraction. Alex Potts makes the case that the ambition to create work that engaged with the everyday and political realities of the world motivated much of the period’s vital experimentation with medium and artistic process.Experiments in Modern Realism is a refreshingly unorthodox account of the artistic and political impulses shaping the diverse practices that emerged in mid-20th century art. The wide variety of both canonical and lesser-known work it features ranges from free-form paintings by Dubuffet and De Kooning and assemblages by Rauschenberg and Fahlström to actions and happenings by Beuys and Kaprow. Engaging the fields of history, literature, politics, cultural theory, and art history, this book is a remarkably probing analysis of postwar art from one of the most important voices in art history today.

Art Of Tomorrow: Hilla Rebay And Solomon R. Guggenheim [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 3.95 $A talented artist who studied in Munich, Berlin, and Paris, Hilla Rebay embraced the idea of non-representational art as both a style and an aesthetic philosophy. At age 22 she began to exhibit and was introduced to the influential and avant-garde gallery Der Sturm in Berlin, where she was drawn to modern giants such as Marc Chagall, Vasily Kandinsky, and Paul Klee. When Rebay moved to America in 1927, she was commissioned by Solomon R. Guggenheim to paint his portrait, and from that point she began her mission to enlighten him with the art she so fervently supported. Rebay introduced Guggenheim to artists such as Kandinsky, and in 1937, he established the Solomon R. Guggenheim foundation for the magnificent collection he had purchased, based on Rebay's advice. In 1939, he and Rebay started the Museum of Non-objective painting, which, in 1959 opened as today's Guggenheim Museum in New York City. This catalogue, which accompanies the exhibition Art of Tomorrow: Hilla Rebay and Solomon R. Free Speech Beyond Words : The Surprising Reach of the First Amendment
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 106.29 $A look at First Amendment coverage of music, non-representational art, and nonsenseThe Supreme Court has unanimously held that Jackson Pollock’s paintings, Arnold Schöenberg’s music, and Lewis Carroll’s poem “Jabberwocky” are “unquestionably shielded” by the First Amendment. Nonrepresentational art, instrumental music, and nonsense: all receive constitutional coverage under an amendment protecting “the freedom of speech,” even though none involves what we typically think of as speech—the use of words to convey meaning. As a legal matter, the Court’s conclusion is clearly correct, but its premises are murky, and they raise difficult questions about the possibilities and limitations of law and expression. Nonrepresentational art, instrumental music, and nonsense do not employ language in any traditional sense, and sometimes do not even involve the transmission of articulable ideas. How, then, can they be treated as “speech” for constitutional purposes? What does the difficulty of that question suggest for First Amendment law and theory? And can law resolve such inquiries without relying on aesthetics, ethics, and philosophy? Comprehensive and compelling, this book represents a sustained effort to account, constitutionally, for these modes of “speech.” While it is firmly centered in debates about First Amendment issues, it addresses them in a novel way, using subject matter that is uniquely well suited to the task, and whose constitutional salience has been under-explored. Drawing on existing legal doctrine, aesthetics, and analytical philosophy, three celebrated law scholars show us how and why speech beyond words should be fundamental to our understanding of the First Amendment.

Manierre Dawson (1887-1969) A Catalogue Raisonne [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 350.00 $Manierre Dawson (1887-1969) has been heralded as one of the most innovative American artists of his generation. He created his first series of non-representational abstract paintings in the spring of 1910, making him the first American artist to paint abstractly--a significant position in art history. Inclusion in the influential 1913 Armory Show in Chicago furthered his life-long commitment to abstract art. This richly illustrated catalogue raisonné is the first comprehensive examination of Dawson's life and work. The publication provides detailed provenance, exhibition histories, and bibliographic references for his known 512 drawings, paintings, and sculpture. The catalogued works are illustrated--including 71 in color--and many of them are reproduced for the first time. An in-depth essay by Dr. Randy J. Ploog, of The Pennsylvania State University, examines the artist's career and explores Dawson's legacy as one of the most innovative, compelling, and masterful of American artists. The catalogue entries are annotated with the artist's statements and augmented by the facsimile reproduction of Dawson's handwritten "Record of Paintings and Sculpture" (circa 1903-1963) and a transcription of his personal "Journal", spanning the majority of his career. A series of detailed appendices furnish detailed accounts of the artist's exhibition history and works in public collections. Authored by Randy J. Ploog, Myra Bairstow and Ani Boyajian, this publication is an invaluable resource to scholars in all fields of American art, facilitating a deeper understanding of Dawson's work and his place in art history.
