The Notting Hill Mystery
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 28.36 $Can you name the first detective novel ever published? For years, many believed it to be Wilkie Collins’s The Moonstone, published in 1868. Others speculated it might be Émile Gaboriau’s first Monsieur Lecoq novel, L’Affaire Lerouge. Actually, the firstmodern detective novel predates both of these by several years—Charles Warren Adams’s The Notting Hill Mystery, originally published as an eight-part serial in Once A Week magazine in 1862 under the pseudonym Charles Felix, then as a single-volume novel in 1863 by Bradbury & Evans, is considered to truly be the first. The Notting Hill Mystery begins in London, where the wife of the sinister Baron R__ dies after drinking from a bottle of acid, apparently while sleepwalking in her husband’s home laboratory. It looks like an accident, until insurance investigator Ralph Henderson learns that Baron R__ took out numerous life insurance policies on his wife. As Henderson investigates the case, he discovers not one, but three murders. Presented as Henderson’s evidential findings—diary entries, family letters, chemical analysis reports, interviews with witnesses, along with a crime scene map—the novel displays innovative techniques that would not become common features of detective fiction until the 1920s. To the delight of all fans of detective fiction, the British Library makes this landmark text available once again. This handsome new edition also includes George du Maurier’s illustrations, the first edition to do so since the original publication in serial form.

The Napoleon Of Notting Hill: By G. K. Chesterton - Illustrated
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.22 $How is this book unique? Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Illustrated About The Napoleon Of Notting Hill by G. K. Chesterton The Napoleon of Notting Hill is a novel written by G. K. Chesterton in 1904, set in a nearly unchanged London in 1984. Although the novel is set in the future, it is, in effect, set in an alternative reality of Chesterton's own period, with no advances in technology or changes in the class system or attitudes. It postulates an impersonal government, not described in any detail, but apparently content to operate through a figurehead king, randomly chosen.

Policing Notting Hill : Fifty Years of Turbulence
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 33.73 $Notting Hill is one of the most sought after locations in London. But its progress from 'ghetto' to gentrification spans a time when it was one of the most turbulent places in Britain. Plagued by racial tensions, unsolved killings, drugs, prostitution, no-go areas and riots, it was populated by some intriguing and challenging characters as well as being the venue for an iconic, sometimes disorderly, annual Carnival. Based on first-hand knowledge, prodigious research and hitherto unpublished sources, Policing Notting Hill also records Tony Moore's time as Divisional Commander at what Roger Graef described in the Evening Standard as the most widely publicised 'nick' in Britain. 'Tony Moore is well-fitted to write a history of Notting Hill and its relationship with the Metropolitan Police': Lord Blair of Boughton. 'All Saints Road in Notting Hill is one of those areas of London where crime is at its worst, where drug-dealing is intolerably overt and where the racial ingredient is at its most potent': Sir Kenneth Newman. 'From the late sixties until recently, All Saints Road was to drugs what Hatton Garden is to diamonds': Robert Hardman, The Spectator. A masterly account of policing, partnership and social change.
