The Occupation of Havana: War, Trade, and Slavery in the Atlantic World
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 31.99 $A fine copy. 2018 Trade Paperback. 333 pp. In 1762, British forces mobilized more than 230 ships and 26,000 soldiers, sailors, and enslaved Africans to attack Havana, one of the wealthiest and most populous ports in the Americas. They met fierce resistance. Spanish soldiers and local militias in Cuba, along with enslaved Africans who were promised freedom, held off the enemy for six suspenseful weeks. In the end, the British prevailed, but more lives were lost in the invasion and subsequent eleven-month British occupation of Havana than during the entire Seven Years' War in North America. The Occupation of Havana offers a nuanced and poignantly human account of the British capture and Spanish recovery of this coveted Caribbean city. The book explores both the interconnected histories of the British and Spanish empires and the crucial role played by free people of color and the enslaved in the creation and defense of Havana. Tragically, these men and women would watch their promise of freedom and greater rights vanish in the face of massive slave importation and increased sugar production upon Cuba's return to Spanish rule. By linking imperial negotiations with events in Cuba and their consequences, Elena Schneider sheds new light on the relationship between slavery and empire at the dawn of the Age of Revolutions.

The Occupation
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.05 $In February 2003, Patrick Cockburn secretly crossed the Tigris river from Syria into Iraq just before the US/British invasion, and has covered the war ever since. In The Occupation, he provides a vivid and disturbing picture of a country in turmoil, and the dangers and privations endured by its people. The Occupation explores the mosaic of communities in Iraq, the US and Britain’s failure to understand the country they were invading and how this led to fatal mistakes. Cockburn, who has been visiting Iraq since 1978, describes the disintegration of the country under the occupation. Travelling throughout Iraq, from the Kurdish north, to Baghdad, Falluja and Basra, he records the response of the country’s population – Shia and Sunni, Arab and Kurd – to the invasion, the growth of the resistance and its transformation into a full-scale uprising. He explains why deepening religious and ethnic divisions drove the country towards civil war.Above all, Cockburn traces how the occupation’s failure led to the collapse of the country, and the high price paid by Iraqis. He charts the impact of savage sectarian killings, rampant corruption and economic chaos on everyday life: from the near destruction of Baghdad’s al-Mutanabi book market to the failure to supply electricity, water and, ironically, fuel to Iraq’s population. The Occupation is a compelling portrait of a ravaged country, and the appalling consequences of imperial arrogance.

The Occupation Trilogy: La Place de L'etoile - the Night Watch - Ring Roads
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 87.53 $'Brisk, smart, witty, elliptical ...Recalls the directors of the New Wave ...Bracing and brilliant'Independent When Patrick Modiano was awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize for Literature he was praised for using the 'art of memory' to bring to life the Occupation of Paris during the Second World War. Born in 1945, Modiano's brilliant, angry writings burst onto the Parisian literary scene and caused a storm. His first, ferociously satirical novel, La Place de l'Etoile, was remarkable in seriously questioning both Nazi collaboration in France and the myths of the Gaullist era. The Night Watch tells the story of a man caught between his work for the French Gestapo and for a Resistance cell. Ring Roads recounts a son's search for his Jewish father, who disappeared ten years previously. These brilliant, almost hallucinatory, evocations of the Occupation attempt to exorcise the past by exploring the morally ambiguous worlds of collaboration and resistance.

Occupation Circumnavigator: Sailing Around the World
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 81.11 $A hippy Sell Up and Sail, this entertaining and inspiring book is more than just a cruising narrative – it is an instructive account showing how anyone can circumnavigate (or even sail for an extended period) without huge funds. Lars Hassler originally set off intending to sail for three years, but by judiciously using his funds, and topping them up by taking charter guests on cruises, he sailed around the world for ten years. Woven into the book is advice on costs, distances, timing, power needs, food and medication – in other words, the practicalities that everyone who sails needs to know about. And at the end, there is a forward-looking chapter providing advice on ‘After the Circumnavigation – What Next?’ With a Foreword by Jimmy Cornell and a gorgeous photo section, this is an enjoyable and useful read for anyone thinking, or dreaming, about making an extended cruise.

The Occupation of the Factories: Italy, 1920
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 190.38 $From Introduction: "In the 'Socialist Almanac' for 1921 there are some rare photographs of what the diligent compiler called 'the most striking episode in the struggle being fought in Italy between capital and labor': the occupation of the factories by the metalworkers in September 1920. These photographs recreate a legendary atmosphere; their images, bright or somber, register in the memory as the very symbol of the 'biennio rosso', the 'red two years' of the blazing aftermath of the First World War. It was power which was at stake in this conflict 'between capital and labour' and for most people, whether they feared it or hoped for it, revolution loomed as the natural and imminent outcome of the great social upheaval precipitated by the war, the Russian October, the profound crisis in which all the nations and peoples of Europe were struggling. In one photograph, before a closed gate emblazoned with the hammer and sickle, a red guard stands sentry, with helmet and fixed bayonet. In another, a red flag flies from the prow of a ship on the stocks, easily visible on its side the name under which the workers launched it: 'Lenin'. What happened in Italy in September 1920 was in truth an exceptional event, and these images give us at least an immediate perception of it. To direct oneself to the atmosphere, the problems, the daily chronicle of the occupation means also to liberate one's judgment from the clichés, the generalizations, the myths and the apocalyptic visions which have encrusted it. It was no accident when Gramsci, writing in one of his prison notebooks on the clamacteric moment of the biennio rosso, spoke of the 'great fear'. The emotions it evoked throughout the country were titanic: and not only at that moment, for, after decades, the occupation of the factories is still an obligatory point of reference in the social and political life of Italy."--Paolo Spriano, April 1964

Occupation Without Troops
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 31.26 $History. When American Occupation troops withdrew from Japan, did they leave behind a truly independent country? Or did they leave in place a behind-the-scenes network that determined much of the course of Japanese politics for decades to come? Painstakingly researched, by authors who have between them over fifty years of experience in Japan, this book looks at aspects of the Japan-U.S. relationship that others have missed or avoided. At the heart of the book is the story of how a few men reversed the original policies of the Occupation, and went on to create a web of money and influence connecting Washington, New York, Tokyo and Riyadh. These men set the stage for postwar bilateral relations, intrigues, and manipulations. Making their appearance on this carefully-set stage are the well-connected arms dealer, Adrian Khasshoggi, several Japanese prime ministers, Emperor Hirohito, by way of a personal "message," the Reverend Sung Myung Moon, the "nisei Onassis" and the self described "world's richest fascist" amongst others. A combination of investigative journalism and scholarly research, An Occupation Without Troups provides a startling new understanding of the Japan-U.S. relationship. This pioneering book is essential reading for anyone who hopes to gain a true grasp of relations between these two countries since World War II.
