Oman in Early Islamic History [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 49.19 $This text provides an in-depth study of the history of Oman from the advent of Islam until the fall of the second Ibadi Imamate in AH 280. In pulling together scattered fragments of historical material, Dr Al-Rawas gives a vivid account of Oman's position in the early Islamic community during a hitherto underexamined period of its history. Oman, following the death of the Prophet Muhammad, was successfully targeted for conversion to Islam by the nascent Islamic government in Medina. After embracing the new religion, Oman fell under the influence of the heterodox Islamic movements in Basra, particularly the Kharijite revolt. It eventually chose the Ibadi doctrine, a moderate offshoot of Kharijism, as its national creed. After exploring the teachings of Ibadism the author examines in detail the establishment and subsequent collapse of the two Ibadi imamates in Oman against a background of conflicting tribal loyalties and the opposition of the Islamic caliphate. During this time, Dr Al-Rawas maintains, Oman underwent a number of far-reaching changes which totally transformed the socio-political face of the country, securing its position as an independent entity with its own distinctive brand of Islam - a position it has held until the present day. He concludes his study by charting Oman's gradual descent into civil war, resulting from internal disputes between the various factions of the Ibadi ulema, and its eventual subjection to Abbasid rule.

Oman: Politics and Society in the Qaboos State (Columbia/Hurst)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.94 $With the help of British advisors, Sultan Qaboos overthrew his father, the ruler of Oman, in 1970, yet few expected the new leader to thrive. Sultan Qaboos was an unfamiliar figure to his own people, and Oman was a poor country wracked by multiple civil wars. Nevertheless, Sultan Qaboos cemented his rule by introducing a policy of national unification and assimilating all of Oman into an oil rentier state framework. He also promoted the idea that the figure of the sultan could embody the state, which later led to a celebration of the sultan as an incarnation of Oman's "renaissance."Based on years of research, Marc Valeri treats the political career of Sultan Qaboos as a case study revealing the social and political mechanisms of authoritarianism in postcolonial states. Valeri examines how Sultan Qaboos established and constantly renewed his base in order to meet internal and external challenges to his power. He also considers what happens when one part of this model, namely an oil-rent economy, falters, and the privileges enjoyed by half the population are no longer tenable. In particular, Valeri addresses the creation of a different model and how this pursuit depends as much on the network of power and privilege that has developed alongside polity as on the interference of economic and technological forces. At the same time, different and overlapping identities-ethnic, religious, historical, or a combination thereof-persist and in some cases reemerge, intertwining with challenges to wider state- and nation-building exercises and to the regime's legitimizing strategies. In conclusion, Valeri expands his focus beyond the state of Oman, evaluating the practices of other Arab monarchies in Morocco, Jordan, and the Persian Gulf.

Located at the eastern end of the Arabian Peninsula, the Sultanate of Oman is a land of great contrasts, from the rugged, weatherworn Hajar Mountains in the north, across the barren desert of the Central Plains to lush Dhofar in the south, where tropical humidity allows a lush greenery. Modest oil reserves have allowed Oman to develop, but rather than get caught up in the Gulf State oil mania, the Omani people still identify more with their age-old traditions as a trading and seafaring nation. A stable and hospitable state, Oman provides, perhaps more than other Middle Eastern country, an enchanting blend of colorful, exotic landscapes, rich history and culture, and an understanding of and careful integration with the modern world. 124 full-color photographs and 10 maps

Birds of Oman Format: Paperback
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 34.02 $Oman is a truly amazing place. In terms of avifauna it lies at the crossroads between Asian and African species--Arabian desert species to the north, and a host of Afrotropical species occurring in the monsoon-swept south that don't occur anywhere else in the Western Palaearctic. With much of the Middle East now effectively off-limits to birders, people are increasingly turning to Oman and its avian riches. And what riches they are--highlights include the incredible Omani Owl, discovered just a couple of years ago in the Al Hajar mountains, a suite of regionally scarce wheatears, exotic pigeons, shearwaters and storm-petrels that can be seen from the beach, a host of wintering eagles, plus impressive residents such as Verreaux's, the only accessible sites for Arabian Golden-winged Grosbeak, and Yemen Serin; the list goes on and on. This book is the perfect guide to this wonderful country's birdlife. Written by the world's leading expert on Middle Eastern birds, Richard Porter, along with Oman bird specialist Jens Eriksen, with color plates opposite concise species text and accurate maps, it is indispensable for any naturalist visiting this jewel of the Arabian peninsula.
