Origins of Christian Anti Internatio PB: Conservative Evangelicals and the League of Nations
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.98 $The roots of conservative Christian skepticism of international politics run deep. In this original work Markku Ruotsila artfully unearths the historical and theological origins of evangelical Christian thought on modern-day international organizations and U.S. foreign policy, particularly in the fierce debates over the first truly international body―the League of Nations. After describing the rise of the Social Gospel movement that played a vital, foundational role in the movement toward a League of Nations, The Origins of Christian Anti-Internationalism examines the arguments and tactics that the most influential confessional Christian congregations in the United States―dispensational millenialists, Calvinists, Lutherans, and, to a lesser extent, Methodists, Episcopalians, and Christian Restorationists―used to undermine domestic support for the proposed international body. Ruotsila recounts how these groups learned to co-opt less religious-minded politicians and organizations that were likewise opposed to the very concept of international multilateralism. In closely analyzing how the evangelical movement successfully harnessed political activism to sway U.S. foreign policy, he traces a direct path from the successful battle against the League to the fundamentalist-modernist clashes of the 1920s and the present-day debate over America's role in the world. This exploration of why the United States ultimately rejected the League of Nations offers a lucid interpretation of the significant role that religion plays in U.S. policymaking both at home and abroad. Ruotsila's analysis will be of interest to scholars and practitioners of theology, religious studies, religion and politics, international relations, domestic policy, and U.S. and world history.

European Fields : the Landscape of Lower League Football
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 99.95 $At the beginning of the 1995 soccer season, Hans van der Meer set out to take photographs of the game that dodged the cliched traditions of modern sports photography. In an attempt to record the sport in its original form--a field, two goals and 22 players--he sought matches at the bottom end of the amateur leagues. He avoided tight telescopic details and the hyperbole of action photography, pulled back from the central subject of the pitch, and set the playing field and its unfolding action in the context of local elements. Over the last 10 years, Van der Meer has continued this project across the playing fields of Europe, traveling to every country with a significant history of the game. The Netherlands yielded 1998's Dutch Fields, and the odyssey that brings forth European Fields has since taken him from Bihariain, Romania to Bjàrkà, Sweden, from Torp, Norway to Als*àrs, Hungary, from Bartkowo, Poland to Beire, Portugal, and to urban and suburban Greece, Finland, England, France, Germany, Scotland, Switzerland, Holland, Slovakia, Denmark, Ireland, Wales, Belgium, Spain and Italy. Van der Meer's understated observations of the poetry and absurdity of human behavior on the field use soccer to consider--and provoke a laugh at--the human condition. Also available in a large-format hardcover edition.

It is still considered one of Verne's greatest works as well as one of he earliest science fiction novels. It describes the journey around the world of Captain Nemo and his submarine, the Nautilus, which had been thought a giant monster when first spotted. The description of the Nautilus was considered ahead of its time, as it accurately describes features on submarines, which at the time were primitive vessels. The 20,000 leagues referred to in the title is the distance traveled around the world and not the depth and is equal to more than 50,000 miles.

WIFFLE: The Wild, Zany and Sometimes Hilariously True Story of the World Football League
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 81.34 $The decade of the 1970s was a unique, fascinating, depressing and exciting period all at the same time. It was a turbulent time that saw many history-making events, and some wild and crazy fads and fashions come and go. A lot of things associated with the 1970s, such as bell bottoms, leisure suits, Jimmy Hoffa, pet rocks, lava lamps, mood rings, Nehru jackets, disco music, and Richard Nixon, didn't survive that turbulent decade. Neither did the World Football League. Like the decade itself, the WFL was at once unique, fascinating, depressing, and exciting. It was a slick, mod, hip alternative to an established entity, the National Football League. It featured the Dickerrod, King Corcoran, bouncing checks, yellow footballs, court orders, magenta and orange uniforms, color-coded pants, Papergate, and singular team nicknames that one scribe said made the WFL sound more like a listing of Indian folklore than a football league. But, also like the decade itself, while the league did not survive the 70s, the wild, zany and hilariously true stories associated with the WFL survive to this day. The WFL never ceased to amaze and entertain. As Alex Hawkins, color commentator for the WFL's Game of the Week broadcasts so aptly said, "The whole thing was so bizarre, that you just had to love it.". All of these stories are chronicled in "WIFFLE" -- a book that can be best described as a 50-yard-line ticket to a real-life Theater of the Absurd.
