50 Jobs in 50 States: One Man's Journey of Discovery across America
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.36 $Like lots of college grads, Daniel Seddiqui was having a hard time finding a job. But despite more than forty rejections, he knew there were opportunities out there. So he set out on an extraordinary quest: fifty jobs in fifty states in fifty weeks. And not just any jobs. His goal was as much to explore America as to explore different careers, so he chose jobs that reflected the culture and economy of each state. Working as everything from a cheesemaker in Wisconsin, a border patrol agent in Arizona and a meatpacker in Kansas to a lobsterman in Maine, a surfing instructor in Hawaii and a football coach in Alabama, Daniel chronicles how he adapted to the wildly differing people, cultures, and environments. From one week to the next he had no idea what he’d be doing, where he’d be sleeping, what he’d be eating, or how he’d be received. He even became a roving news item, appearing on CNN, Fox News, World News Tonight, MSNBC and the Today Show—which was good preparation for his stint as a TV weatherman. Tackling challenge after challenge—overcoming anxiety about working four miles underground in a West Virginia coalmine, learning to walk on six-foot stilts (in a full Egyptian king costume) at an Florida amusement park, racing the clock as a pit-crew member at an Indiana racetrack –Daniel completed his journey a changed man. In this book he shares stories about the people he met, the lessons he learned and explains the five principles that kept him going.

God's Elect and the Great Tribulation: An Interpretation of Matthew 24:1-31 and Daniel 9
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 28.82 $This is the first scholarly defense of the pillars of the prewrath position put forth by Charles Cooper, former professor at Moody Bible Institute and now founder of the Prewrath Resource Institute and one of the position's most well-respected lecturers. The book takes a serious academic look at the application of Matthew 24:1-31 and Daniel 9 to the Church, but is written to be accessible to readers at all levels. The first section deals in-depth with the issue, "Does Matthew 24:1-31 apply to the Church?" In this section, Cooper examines what can be learned, both from the text and from the writings of the church fathers. On the issue of text, he looks at language issues, culture, book composition, authorship and intent of the gospel, and much more. On the issue of Daniel 9, he looks at issues related to event dating, prophetic context, and original language, ultimately putting forth an unexpected interpretation of the fulfillment of the 69th Week. This book has four goals: (1) to support the prewrath position in its conclusion that insisting on a sharp distinction between God's work in Israel and His work in the Church is a false presupposition that directly contradicts scripture; (2) to support the prewrath position in its conclusion that Matthew 24:1-31 does apply to the Church, the bride of Christ; (3) to set forth a clear biblical exposition of Matthew 24:1-31 and (4) to correct the false and misleading conclusions about both the timing and fulfillment of Daniel 9:24-27.

Double or Nothing (Daniel Faust)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.59 $Daniel Faust – sorcerer, thief, and newly-minted Las Vegas crime boss – has debts to pay. One of those debts has just come due, an IOU to be paid in the form of a high-risk heist, and it’s a job he can’t refuse. The mark? Daniel’s arch-nemesis, a man with a Cheshire smile and the powers of a living god. The score? A sacrificial dagger buried under layers of electronic, occult, and human security, snug on the far side of a custom-built deathtrap. Normally, a heist like that would be the end of Daniel’s problems. This time, it’s only the beginning. Caitlin, Daniel’s lover and the right hand of a demon prince, faces her own threat. She’s adept at navigating the politics of Hell, keeping the peace with diplomatic grace and a whip, but a plan years in the making has left a ticking time bomb under her feet. When it explodes, it will send shockwaves through the infernal courts – and expose one of Caitlin’s darkest secrets. A hidden enemy has targeted Caitlin and Daniel for destruction, and aims to lure them into an impossible snare. For one of them to escape, the other must die. The only way out is through a maze of demonic bounty hunters, psychic assassins, unlikely enemies and even more unlikely allies. Daniel Faust has spent his life as a trickster, defeating his enemies with the art of the con. He may have finally met his match. Las Vegas is the ultimate chessboard, and his opponent is already two moves ahead.

How the Other Half Ate : A History of Working-Class Meals at the Turn of the Century

How the Other Half Ate is a deep exploration by historian and lecturer Katherine Turner that delivers an unprecedented and thoroughly researched study of the changing food landscape in American working-class families from industrialization through the 1950s. The Making of a Radical: A Political Autobiography (Good Life Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 56.09 $Scott Nearing lived one hundred years, from 1883 to 1983--a life spanning most of the twentieth century. In his early years, Nearing made his name as a formidable opponent of child labor and military imperialism. Having been fired from university jobs for his independence of mind, Nearing became a freelance lecturer and writer, traveling widely through Depression-era and post-war America to speak with eager audiences. Five-time Socialist candidate for president Eugene V. Debs said, "Scott Nearing! He is the greatest teacher in the United States." Concluding that it would be better to be poor in the country than in New York City, Scott and Helen Nearing moved north to Vermont in 1932 and commenced the experiment in self-reliant living that would extend their fame far and wide. They began to grow most of their own food, and devised their famous scheme for allocating the day's hours: one third for "bread work" (livelihood), one third for "head work" (intellectual endeavors), and one third for "service to the world community." Scott (who'd grown up partly on his grandfather's Pennsylvania farm) taught Helen (who was raised in suburbia, groomed for a career as a classical violinist) the practical skills they would need: working with tools, cultivating a garden and managing a woodlot, and building stone and masonry walls. For the rest of their lives, the Nearings chronicled in detail their "good life," first in Vermont and ultimately on the coast of Maine, in a group of wonderful books--many of which are now being returned to print by Chelsea Green in cooperation with the Good Life Center, an educational trust established at the Nearings' Forest Farm in Harborside, Maine, to promote their ongoing legacy. With a new foreword by activist historian Staughton Lynd, The Making of a Radical is freshly republished-Scott Nearing's own story, told as only he could tell it.

Driven: How Human Nature Shapes our Choices
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 54.18 $A touchstone for understanding how we behave on the job "This is a stimulating and provocative book in bringing together important ideas from different fields, and, thereby, giving us a whole new slant on 'human nature.'" --Edgar H. Schein, Sloan Fellows Professor of Management Emeritus and Senior Lecturer, MIT In this astonishing, provocative, and solidly researched book, two Harvard Business School professors synthesize 200 years of thought along with the latest research drawn from the biological and social sciences to propose a new theory, a unified synthesis of human nature. Paul Lawrence and Nitin Nohria have studied the way people behave in that most fascinating arena of human behavior-the workplace-and from their work they produce a book that examines the four separate and distinct emotive drives that guide human behavior and influence the choices people make: the drives to acquire, bond, learn, and defend. They ultimately show that, just as advances in information technology have spurred the New Economy in the last quarter of the twentieth century, current advances in biology will be the key to understanding humans and organizations in the new millennium.

Up the Line
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 110.16 $Being a Time Courier was one of the best jobs Judson Daniel Elliott III ever had. It was tricky, though, taking group after group of tourists back to the same historic event without meeting yoruself coming or going. Trickier still was avoiding the temptation to become intimately involved with the past and interfere with events to come. The deterrents for any such actions were frighteningly effective. So Judson Daniel Elliott played by the book. Then he met a lusty Greek in Byzantium who showed him how rules were made to be broken...and set him on a family-history-go-round that would change his past and his future forever!
