Paracelsus: Speculative Theory and the Crisis of the Early Reformation
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 58.52 $Paracelsus is commonly regarded as one of the great figures of sixteenth-century Europe and of German intellectual history. This book examines the content of his writings in order to clarify it and its historical context.Paracelsus is regarded as one of the great medical innovators of all time, as a prototype of Goethe's Faust and as a founder of German Renaissance nature philosophy. Recently, his role in the popular "radical Reformation" that coincided with but went beyond Luther's church reform has been recognized as well. A legendary wanderer and rebel, he is an author of undisputed importance, but also one clouded by puzzling ambiguities.Based on a close examination and revised dating of Paracelsus's writings, this book rejects certain myths concerning the author's scientific orientation and experience of nature. The genesis of his thought is traced to his responses to sectarian conflicts of the early Reformation. One can characterize Paracelsus's project as that of a radical theorist who transgressed the boundaries of disciplines and seized upon the irreducible particularities of his phenomena--the transmuted disease or the unrecognized female pathology--to challenge the established order and ideology.

The Hermetic and Alchemical Writings of Paracelsus. Vol.1. Hermetic Chemistery.
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 105.54 $Paracelsus is known primarily as an alchemist and as the father of modern medicine. His studies began when he was quite young and carried him throughout Europe and the Mediterranean to accumulate the knowledge and practices known to the world at that time. He was typical of the Renaissance: he embodied the contradictions inherent in that age - its fanatical faiths, its intellectual ferments, its struggles of ideologies. He revolutionized both medicine and alchemy by rejecting the prevailing Galenic four humour theory and substituting a chemical theory of humours as properties operating in the body. Paracelsus realized that the body is a chemical system: his entire concern with alchemy was medical. These two volumes represent his reworking of Medieval alchemical theory that gave birth to the chemical treatment of physical illness. Arthur Edward Waite (1867-1940) devoted his long life to the study and application of mysticism, magic and religion. He was one of the leaders of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn for many years, later belonged to several other secret brotherhoods, and founded at least one of his own. His written works cover a broad spectrum of the occult arts, including books on the Rosicrucians, Tarot, Kabbalah, magic and alchemy. Strongly opinionated, he is one of the most respected scholars of the nineteenth century in occult research.

Lovely Medicine: From Residency to Paracelsus
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.47 $Medical residencies are scarcely written about—“it’s just something you have to get through,” Madsen was advised when she sought help. Deciding to leave after the first year, a more tolerable program—like a country-club version of the gulag—enticed her to stay in the game. When residency ended, Madsen discovered holistic healing through anthroposophic medicine. There she found the medical home she’d been searching for since day one of medical school. As Madsen was developing her healer identity within her conventional practice, her adventures embraced reconnecting with her family after residency, strategies to use with drug seekers, midnight commutes on her bike, and how to listen to the land and plants. She ends up in a rural life in Vermont, finally finding her spirit home within medicine and the world. Lovely Medicine is the second of a trilogy of memoirs about Madsen's adventures through conventional medicine. The first, Medicine Dreams, is about going to medical school in her forties while married with three children, and holistically bent. The trilogy is completed with the book, Guilty by Degree--the story about when the Feds came to her office, and what transpired after that.
