Reduced Parenthetical Clauses As Mitigators 1388-0373: A Corpus Study of Spoken French, Italian and Spanish
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 118.77 $While parentheticals attract constant attention, they very rarely constitute the main subject of monographs. This book provides a comprehensive account of reduced parenthetical clauses (RPCs) in three Romance languages. Typical French RPCs are je crois, disons, je dirais, je pense, je sais pas, and je trouve. The research draws on 22 corpora of spoken French, Italian, and Spanish comprising a total amount of 3,975,500 words. Its results consist in a typology of the relevant expressions in the three languages, in the understanding of their pragmatic function and of the factors influencing their use, and in the description of their syntactic and prosodic properties. Other findings are that RPCs are not restricted to statements but also occur in questions and that belief verbs are not as frequent as commonly assumed. Although the book is about Romance parentheticals, its conclusions are relevant for other languages.

Ed Templeton: Tangentially Parenthetical
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 32.93 $Wonder and wit meet in Templeton's unflinching photographsTangentially Parenthetical is a selection of photographs from Ed Templeton's vast street photography archive―curated, arranged and then rearranged by the man himself. The next chapter to his previous book of photos (Wayward Cognitions, 2014), Tangentially Parenthetical picks up where the latter collection ended. By combining intimate, accidental and unconnected moments into one linear piece of work, he tells hundreds of new stories through the thoughtful arrangement of semi-related yet completely unfastened imagery. "I'm out there shooting photos all the time that don't necessarily fall under any theme other than general life," says Templeton, "which is a lame title for a book." With a wink to the absurd, sandwiched between a cover of patterned parentheses and with an afterword built from his own stream-of-consciousness storytelling, Templeton delivers a visual mountain from an archive of stunning molehills―the images are carefully chosen, shuffled by hand and laid out with the dueling impulses of wonder and wit.Born in 1972 and raised in the suburbs of Orange County, California, Ed Templeton is a painter, photographer and a respected cult figure in the subculture of skateboarding. His work has been exhibited worldwide.

I will try to state his case as much as possible in his own words before I proceed to criticize it.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Horn of the Unicorn
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 299.69 $From the author of our tremendously popular The Mouth of the Lion (the life of heroic Bishop Antonio de Castro Mayer) comes this new - and different - biography of Archbishop Lefebvre. Make no mistake, this biography is unlike ANY you have read before. It is a mosaic, if you will, providing parenthetical glimpses and historical soundbites of the life of Marcel Lefebvre. Each tid-bit (sometimes one to a page, sometimes five to a page) offers a new and fascinating insight. A truly unique style of writing. It is perfectly suited to those who want the convenience of picking up the book and reading for one minute OR one hour. Pick it up. Put it down. On your time. Although not a definitive and exhaustive biography like Bishop Tissier de Mallerais's Marcel Lefebvre, The Horn of the Unicorn deftly weaves poetry, Scripture, anecdotes, news, and history into the story of the life of Archbishop Lefebvre. The result is an inspiring and thought-provoking appreciation of his life from one of America's most distinguished Catholic writers. But, you're asking, "I read Bishop Tissier's bio. Why should I read this one?" Because it invites the reader to reflect on the life of Archbishop Lefebvre in a new and different way. Like a motion picture on paper, Dr. White associates thoughts, images, notions, quotations in such a way that an understanding of the Archbishop and his times emerges.

The Noble Qur'an: A New Rendering of Its Meaning in English
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.65 $The Noble Qur'an English By Bewleys A New Rendering of its [#0899,1I1,Meaning In English, T#53 HB 651pp TAHA,Abdalhaqq & Aisha Bewley. NO ARABIC] This rendering is intended primarily as a tool for English speaking Muslim. Instead of being burdened with too many parenthetical notes. (which tends to disturb the flow) , it retains some of the commonly used ` Arabic Words such as Halal, Haram, Dunya, Shaytan, Taqwa, Salat, Zakat (with explanation in the glossary if needed). Key Qur'anic terms has always been retained in languages such as Turkish, Urdu, Malay, Hausa etc. One finds that the Arabic translated word is actually alien to many English speaking 'born Muslims'. and therefore this approach is highly welcome. Note : The Arabic text used for this rendering is the riwaya from Imam Warsh from Nafi', the great reciter of the second generation of Muslims in Madina. This does not mean that there are variation of meaning between this and the reading of Imam Hafs which is what has been used, as the basis of most other English Translations that we come across. This means that in few instances there may be grammatical differences (which may also slightly affect the numbering of the ayat's) . For instance, we may find that in Surat Yunus, ayat 45 reads in this rendering ' On the day We gather them together' whereas in Abdullah Yusuf Ali's translation you will find 'On the day He will gather together'

Idle Fictions: Hispanic Vanguard Novel, 1926-34
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.21 $The "idle fictions" of the vanguard novel of the 1920s and 1930s in Spain and Spanish America represented a kind of interlude of playfulness--a vacation or parenthetical insertion--in what was perceived as the established course of the modern Hispanic novel's development. Yet, as Pérez Firmat argues, though this genre saw itself as recreative and interstitial, it deliberately precipitated "a class war not between social classes but between literary classes." Concentrating on source material not widely available, Pérez Firmat reconstructs the reception these novels received at the time of their publication, then develops a reading of them based on the intellectual context of this reception. A new preface and an appendix on vanguard biographies have been added to this paperback edition.
