From Martyr to Monument: The Abbey of Cluny as Cultural Patrimony
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 63.91 $After the French Revolution and the dissolution of the monastic orders, the great Abbey of Cluny in France was closed and the buildings were sold for materials. This process went on for nearly thirty years, just as a romantic appreciation of the medieval past was gaining popularity. Although the government was unable to halt most of the demolition work, one transept arm with a large and small tower was saved from ruin, along with a few small Gothic buildings and the eighteenth-century cloister. Efforts to preserve, repair, and reuse the remains waxed and waned for a century while historians wrote with regret about the abbeyâs demise. In 1927, Kenneth Conant came from Harvard to excavate the site with American funding in order to prepare full-scale reconstructive drawings of the abbey. Conantâs vision of medieval Cluny entered the art-historical canon and placed Cluny at the center of debates about Romanesque architecture and sculptural decoration in Europe. This study follows the discursive history of the site while investigating the role of memory in the construction of the past and the development of the conception of heritage and patrimony in France. Silvio Berlusconi: Television, Power and Patrimony
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.99 $Silvio Berlusconi, a self-made man with a taste for luxurious living, owner of a huge television empire and the politician who likened a German MEP to a Nazi concentration camp guard—small wonder that much of democratic Europe and America has responded with considerable dismay and disdain to his governance of Italy.Paul Ginsborg, contemporary Italy’s foremost historian, explains here why we should take Berlusconi seriously. His new book combines historical narrative–Berlusconi’s childhood in the dynamic and paternalist Milanese bourgeoisie, his strict religious schooling, a working life which has encompassed crooning, large construction projects and the creation of a commercial television empire–with careful analysis of Berlusconi’s political development. While highlighting the particular italianita of Berlusconi’s trajectory, Ginsborg also finds international tendencies, such as the distorted relationship between the media system and politics. Throughout, Ginsborg suggests that Berlusconi has gotten as far as he has thanks to the wide-open space left by the strategic weaknesses of modern left-wing politics.

Gothic Art in the Gilded Age: Medieval and Renaissance Treasures in the Gavet-Vanderbilt-Ringling Collection
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 49.97 $Paintings of ruined cathedrals, mystery fiction, and nationalist claims to medieval origins for language, law, and cultural patrimony--these mark the beginning of the re-invention of the Gothic that was to become key to the Romantic Movement in early 19th-century Europe. By contrast, in the U.S., it was only after the Civil War, the spread of Ruskin s teachings, and the emergence of Gilded Age wealth that art collectors developed a taste and an interpretation for artefacts previously consigned to a Dark Age of blind faith and alien codes of representation. In this highly original book, a team of international experts trace the history of the first sizable collection of Gothic art brought from Paris to the U.S. in 1889. Though it belonged to Alva Vanderbilt (the Commodore s daughter-in-law), it was sold to John Ringling in 1927 and is now part of the Ringling Museum. The essays explain why early Italian paintings, including a masterpiece by Piero di Cosimo, could be regarded as Gothic rather than as Renaissance and show how 19th-century installations of the objects enveloped them in an atmosphere of mystery and ancient privilege.A catalogue with color illustrations of every object in the collection makes this book indispensable to museum visitors as well as to scholars of medieval art, medieval revivals, and the history of collecting.

History's Greatest Heist: The Looting of Russia by the Bolsheviks
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 45.96 $How Lenin’s regime turned Russia’s priceless cultural patrimony into armored cars, trains, planes, and machine guns Historians have never resolved a central mystery of the Russian Revolution: How did the Bolsheviks, despite facing a world of enemies and leaving nothing but economic ruin in their path, manage to stay in power through five long years of civil war? In this penetrating book, Sean McMeekin draws on previously undiscovered materials from the Soviet Ministry of Finance and other European and American archives to expose some of the darkest secrets of Russia’s early days of communism. Building on one archival revelation after another, the author reveals how the Bolsheviks financed their aggression through astonishingly extensive thievery. Their looting included everything from the cash savings of private citizens to gold, silver, diamonds, jewelry, icons, antiques, and artwork.By tracking illicit Soviet financial transactions across Europe, McMeekin shows how Lenin’s regime accomplished history’s greatest heist between 1917 and 1922 and turned centuries of accumulated wealth into the sinews of class war. McMeekin also names names, introducing for the first time the compliant bankers, lawyers, and middlemen who, for a price, helped the Bolsheviks launder their loot, impoverish Russia, and impose their brutal will on millions.
