Patrolling the Border focuses on a late eighteenth-century conflict between Creek Indians and Georgians. The conflict was marked by years of seemingly random theft and violence culminating in open war along the Oconee River, the contested border between the two peoples. Joshua S. Haynes argues that the period should be viewed as the struggle of nonstate indigenous people to develop an effective method of resisting colonization.Using database and digital mapping applications, Haynes identifies one such method of resistance: a pattern of Creek raiding best described as politically motivated border patrols. The book is the true story of how, on Sept 22, 1914, a German U-boat which had been shadowing three British Crusiers patrolling the North Sea torpedoed and sunk all three before breakfast. By mid-morning, the Cruisers Aboukir, Hogue and Cressy lay at the bottom of the North Sea, 1500 British seamen were dead and the triumphant U-boat commander would go on to be made a Knight-Commander of the Iron Cross. The triple sinking caused an outrage at the time and accusations were flung at Prince Louis of Battenburg (the First Sea Lord) and Winston Churchill. A Court of Enquiry followed, but as the pace of the war stepped up and rigorous censorship followed, the incident was all but forgotten. On December 12, 1862, while patrolling Mississippi’s Yazoo River, the ironclad USS Cairo struck a Confederate torpedo. Twelve minutes later, the gunboat slipped beneath the surface approximately eight miles north of Vicksburg, where it remained for exactly 102 years.
