Pay Up and Play the Game: Professional Sport in Britain, 1875–1914
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 125.95 $Based on a vast range of club and association records, Pay Up and Play the Game, first published in 1988, presents a systematic economic analysis of the emergence of mass spectator sport during the years prior to World War I. It explores the tensions behind an increasingly commercialised activity that was nonetheless suffused with 'gentlemanly' values at many levels, and highlights the retreat of the latter as working-class consumption and participation became predominant, symbolised most dramatically by the celebrated victory of proletarian Blackburn Olympic over the Old Etonians in the FA Cup final of 1883. Wray Vamplew examines the linkages between sport, gambling, crime and spectator violence, and concludes that many supposedly 'recent' developments (notably football hooliganism) in fact have their origins in this, the 'Golden Age' of sport in Britain.

An adaptation of the Rover (The banished cavaliers) (Swan Theatre plays) [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.72 $The Rover or The Banish'd Cavaliers is a play in two parts written by the English author Aphra Behn. Having famously worked as a spy for Charles II against the Dutch, Behn lost her meager income when the king refused to pay her expenses. She turned to writing for an income. The Rover premiered 1677 to such great success that Behn wrote a sequel that was produced in 1681. An extraordinarily popular example of Restoration comedy, the play earned an extended run, enabling Behn to make a fair income from it, receiving the proceeds from the box office every third night. Willmore (who may have been a parallel to Charles II or John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester) proved to be an extremely popular character, and four years later Behn wrote a sequel to the play. King Charles II was himself a fan of The Rover, and received a private showing of the play. Behn's work should always be read with an eye toward her contemporary political world. She was a Royalist, and her works frequently treat Puritans roughly. The subtitle "Banish'd Cavaliers" is a reference to the exile that the Cavalier forces experienced during the English Interregnum.

Alan Ayckbourn Plays 4
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.42 $"The Revengers' Comedies": "A hugely entertaining pitch that recalls the old movies to which it frequently pays homage - "Strangers on a Train", "Rebecca", "Kind Hearts" and "Coronets" - and expands after intermission to reveal an immensely disturbing vision of contemporary middle-class England poisoned by the rise of economic ruthlessness and the collapse of ethics". ("New York Times"). "Things We Do for Love": The author of this title won Lloyds Private Banking Playwright of the Year Award. "One of his best, his most shockingly and uproariously funny: a cruel and hilarious masterpiece of tragic comedy and comic tragedy". (Sunday Times). "House & Garden": "The triumph of his ingenuity lies in the fact that you have to see both plays ...A second time round, in whichever order you take them, characters will deepen, while those you know become the background. It is a superb Ayckbourn joke that a comedy about non-communication should depend on the sharpest communication skills". ("Sunday Times").
