Karl Pearson: The Scientific Life in a Statistical Age
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 94.74 $Karl Pearson, founder of modern statistics, came to this field by way of passionate early studies of philosophy and cultural history as well as ether physics and graphical geometry. His faith in science grew out of a deeply moral quest, reflected also in his socialism and his efforts to find a new basis for relations between men and women. This biography recounts Pearson's extraordinary intellectual adventure and sheds new light on the inner life of science. Theodore Porter's intensely personal portrait of Pearson extends from religious crisis and sexual tensions to metaphysical and even mathematical anxieties. Pearson sought to reconcile reason with enthusiasm and to achieve the impersonal perspective of science without sacrificing complex individuality. Even as he longed to experience nature directly and intimately, he identified science with renunciation and positivistic detachment. Porter finds a turning point in Pearson's career, where his humanistic interests gave way to statistical ones, in his Grammar of Science (1892), in which he attempted to establish scientific method as the moral educational basis for a refashioned culture. In this original and engaging book, a leading historian of modern science investigates the interior experience of one man's scientific life while placing it in a rich tapestry of social, political, and intellectual movements.

Statistical Concepts for Criminal Justice and Criminology
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 91.31 $This book is concept-based and focuses on the building blocks of statistical ideas. Covering the essential techniques—univariate tools, Chi-square, t-test, analysis of variance, and Pearson’s r—in a simple conversational style, the text explains the concepts behind each technique and how results are interpreted. Its emphasis is on understanding over mathematical calculations, and its goal is to give students a grasp of the role of variance and error. A chapter on graphical statistics complements the normal quantitative approaches and each technique is set in the context of how it is used to answer research questions.

Theory of Games and Statistical Decisions: Wiley Publication in Statistics
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.37 $Evaluating statistical procedures through decision and game theory, as first proposed by Neyman and Pearson and extended by Wald, is the goal of this problem-oriented text in mathematical statistics. First-year graduate students in statistics and other students with a background in statistical theory and advanced calculus will find a rigorous, thorough presentation of statistical decision theory treated as a special case of game theory. The work of Borel, von Neumann, and Morgenstern in game theory, of prime importance to decision theory, is covered in its relevant aspects: reduction of games to normal forms, the minimax theorem, and the utility theorem. With this introduction, Blackwell and Professor Girshick look at: Values and Optimal Strategies in Games; General Structure of Statistical Games; Utility and Principles of Choice; Classes of Optimal Strategies; Fixed Sample-Size Games with Finite Ω and with Finite A; Sufficient Statistics and the Invariance Principle; Sequential Games; Bayes and Minimax Sequential Procedures; Estimation; and Comparison of Experiments.A few topics not directly applicable to statistics, such as perfect information theory, are also discussed. Prerequisites for full understanding of the procedures in this book include knowledge of elementary analysis, and some familiarity with matrices, determinants, and linear dependence. For purposes of formal development, only discrete distributions are used, though continuous distributions are employed as illustrations. The number and variety of problems presented will be welcomed by all students, computer experts, and others using statistics and game theory. This comprehensive and sophisticated introduction remains one of the strongest and most useful approaches to a field which today touches areas as diverse as gambling and particle physics.

The Statistical Analysis of Compositional Data (Monographs on Statistics and Applied Probability)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 91.71 $As long ago as 1897 Karl Pearson, in a now classic paper on spurious correlation, first pointed out dangers that may befall the analyst who attempts to interpret correlations between ratios whose numerators and denominators contain common parts. He thus implied that the analysis of compositional data, with its concentration on relation ships between proportions of some whole, is likely to be fraught with difficulty. History has proved him correct: over the succeeding years and indeed right up to the present day, there has been no other form of data analysis where more confusion has reigned and where more improper and inadequate statistical methods have been applied. The special and intrinsic feature of compositional data is that the proportions of a composition are naturally subject to a unit-sum constraint. For other forms of constrained data, in particular for directional data where there is a unit-length constraint on each direction vector, scientist and statistician alike have readily appre ciated that new statistical methods, appropriate to the special nature of the data, are required; and there now exists an extensive literature on the successful statistical analysis of directional data. It is paradox ical that for compositional data, subject to an apparently simpler constraint, such an appreciation and development have been slower to emerge. In applications the unit-sum constraint has been widely ignored or wished away and inappropriate 'standard' statistical methods, devised for and successfully applied to unconstrained data, have been used with disastrous consequences.
