Gadfly in Russia
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 79.00 $In an attempt to take a break from his writing career, in 1967 Alan Sillitoe set off in a boxy blue Peugeot from Germany towards the then USSR. In Leningrad, despite his desire to travel alone, he was provided with an official escort in the form of George Andjaparidze, who was to become a fellow journeyman and friend. On their long drive into the heart of the country, George and Alan encountered numerous police checks, spent late nights filled with vodka, and inadvertently took part in a motor rally. This is a story of traveling, history, people, and places; of the Nazis and perestroika; Pushkin and Tolstoy; the fight for freedom and the strong-armed nature of the Soviet government. In the deceptively simple manner for which he is so well known, Alan Sillitoe offers a fascinating account of his relationship with Russia, its people, and their changing fortunes over the past 40 years.

The Porsche 911 Book
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 43.55 $The introduction of the Porsche 901 in 1963 marked↵ a milestone in automotive history. Although the name later had to be changed because Peugeot had patented having a 0 in the middle of car model numbers, the 911 didn't let anything stand in the way of its becoming an iconic sports car. This success story spans all the way from the 901 and the Carrera RS 2.7 (which with its characteristic rear spoiler--the so-called "ducktail"--was the fastest production car of its time) right up to the current generation of the 991. For the 50th birthday of the populous 911 family, the famous automotive photographer Rene Staud, whose The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Book has also been published by teNeues, showcases the most important models--all in his typically radiant and distinctive style.

Travelling with Djinns
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 34.75 $Yasin is driving through Europe in a dilapidated Peugeot 504 with his seven-year-old son Leo. He's not sure where they're going. He just knows he's thirty-seven years old, his wife is about to divorce him and this is his last chance to explain to his son who he is and where he comes from. The problem is that Yasin isn't sure of the answer to these questions himself. Born in the Sudan to an English mother and an Arab father, he has two passports but no national identity. As he and Leo drift through Germany to Paris in search of Europe's history, and onwards through Provence to Spain to find Yasin's ex-lover and his lost brother, Yasin reflects on the tragic-comic ironies of his displaced life and the kind of mixed-up world his son will inhabit. Indy Cars 1911-1939: Great Racers from the Crucible of Speed (Ludvigsen Library)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 76.01 $When a group of Indianapolis businessmen built a 2 1/2-mile track and decided to stage a 500-mile race in 1911 it was an epic undertaking with a huge purse for the times that drew racers from Europe as well as America. Delage, Peugeot, Ballot and Mercedes cars came to win dollars and inspire America's racing-car builders, Harry Miller and the Duesenberg brothers. Soon these native talents came to dominate the 500-mile race, introducing supercharging and front-wheel drive with great success in the 1920s and 16-cylinder engines in the 1930s. This new book in the Ludvigsen Library Series covers racers through the 1930s, completing the Series' sweeping panorama of the cars that raced in the ''500'' from 1911 to the end of the 1970s. Many rare photos from the earliest days of Indy bring the cars, engines and personalities of these pioneering years to life. The drama of their achievements made the Indianapolis 500 the world's greatest auto race.

Bugatti Magnum [ English text ] [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 420.68 $From a UK review: "Let's browse through it again and pick up some appealing aspects. We like the Baby Peugeot on a typical French road in 1913, the many shots of the rare chain-drive cars, and the engine photographs and drawings are excellent. Bugatti Motor Show stands add interest and one notes that at the 1926 Paris Salon the Lorraine Dietrich and Bugatti stands seem to converge. It was rather unkind to show the BOC President having a difficult moment at a Chalfont hillclimb! At that Salon a GP Bugatti is seen raised on a dais and appears to be covered in race victory plaques. The picture of M Lescure in military uniform showing off his T50 to Army personnel indicates that even in the 1930s the French were using Peugeot Army trucks with oil or gas headlamps. Kaye Don in the 154 in close company with Bertram's 10 Y2-litre Delage on the Brooklands' banking gets a full page - Dixon's "fast Riley" in the background is actually the 9hp "Red Mongrel". So a fine browsing book . . . With a replacement Bugatti front axle costing nearly 17 times as much, the book is not expensive by such standards." A lavish and necessary volume for fans of the marque. Comes in handsom slipcase.
