The Realisms of Berenice Abbott provides the first in-depth consideration of the work of photographer Berenice Abbott. Though best known for her 1930s documentary images of New York City, this book examines a broad range of Abbott’s work―including portraits from the 1920s, little known and uncompleted projects from the 1930s, and experimental science photography from the 1950s. It argues that Abbott consistently relied on realism as the theoretical armature for her work, even as her understanding of that term changed over time and in relation to specific historical circumstances. But as Weissman demonstrates, Abbott’s unflinching commitment to “realist” aesthetics led her to develop a critical theory of documentary that recognizes the complexity of representation without excluding or obscuring a connection between art and engagement in the political public sphere. In telling Abbott’s story, The Realisms of Berenice Abbott reveals insights into the politics and social context of documentary production and presents a thoughtful analysis of why documentary remains a compelling artistic strategy today.

Phillips & Drew/GLC Kings 1980 was one of the great chess events. London was a desert for international tournament chess from 1948-1973. In 1975 there was the Evening Standard London Chess Fortnight. Although these were fine events and very valuable to English chess; they could not be compared with the events in Hastings and Teesside. Really the photo from the Daily Mail says it all. The game between 14 year old Nigel Short and Viktor Korchnoi attracted immense interest. I had feared there wouldn't be many spectators. How foolish! So a large number of children were hired to fill up the hall. Of course they couldn't see what was going on, so they came to the front in order to have a better view. Harry Golombek muttered, 'We can't have a mess like that again.' Leonard Barden said, 'We'll have to wait another 20 years anyway.'

With accurate reproductions colour marker and pen drawings on cream paper simply presented without any accompanying text, this book provides an excellent visual insight into Allen's unique method of pictorial construction and inventiveness as a draughtsman. Looking at Allen's drawings in this book is similar to seeing them in his studio, arranged one after another across a wall, some with similar characteristics to that of school exercise book doodles and cartoons, others making, referencing and developing the imagery found in his paintings. The 'whirls and twirls' at the bottom and top of the drawings may be an instinctive or idiosyncratic part of Allen's mark- making, but they also refer to the clumps and gatherings of paint that sit heavily at the top and bottom of his paintings, working both to contain the motif in the 'middle' of the picture and to raise aesthetic dialogue. Allen's drawings are therefore notes on his paintings as well as things that explore the diversity and range of the 'office stationery' he uses, which gives them a vibrant appeal and a very contemporary quality. This exquisite book shows that Allen's drawings are very accomplished, with a simplicity that hides a complexity unique to the practice of drawing and, as such, makes this publication a welcome and innovative contribution to the canon of books on painters.
