Selective Toxicity : The Physico-Chemical Basis of Therapy
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 61.86 $This book is about selectively toxic agents. That is to say, it is about those substances that affect certain cells without harming others, even when they are close neighbours. Toxicity need not be fatal. It can be made easily reversible, as is the case with general anaesthetics. Selective toxicity covers an immense field: most of the drugs used for treating illness in man and his economic animals, as well as all of the fungicides, insecticides, and weed killers that are used in agriculture. Essentially, this book is a discussion of the physical and chemical means which contribute to selectivity, and this is the basis of molecular pharmacology. _Selective Toxicity began as a course of lectures that Professor F. G. Young encouraged me to give in University College London, in 1948 and again in 1949. The first edition appeared in 1951, as a very small book because little was then known about the factors that provide selectivity. Since those early days, the subject has undergone tremendous development. At first, industry was un receptive to the word 'toxicity', however qualified! Yet the market was being supplied with biologically powerful substances of which several had the potential to cause harm. This aspect was brought to light by two events of the early 1960s. The first of these was the discovery that a sedative, thalidomide, administered to expectant mothers, after what was then considered to be adequate testing, had caused permanent deformities in about 10000 children.

Seasonal Distribution of Methanogens in Manimuthar River: Physico chemical parameters of Methanogens
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 96.82 $Methanogenic archaea may have been among earth earliest organisms and today play essential roles in a variety of anaerobic habitants. The present investigation was to study the methanogen population in estuarine sediments in the mouth of Manimuthar River at the Palk Strait and seasonal sampling was made. Most Probable number (MPN) of methanogenic archaea was determined in the period of one year(2009). The archaeal populations were found to be at the maximum of 1.1x105 MPNgm-1 of wet sample during the post-monsoon season. The correlation co efficient (r) values calculated between the methanogenic archaea and various physico chemical parameters in this nitrogen, sodium shows a high significant correlation to the MPN viz., n=18; r=0.976; and r=0.977 at; p<0.001 level respectively. Seasonal variation in the methanogenic population could be influenced by independent abiotic variables such as temperature, salinity, pH, electrical conductivity, nutrients and minerals. The investigation concluded that the methanogenic populations were highly influenced by physico chemical parameters in estuarine ecosystem. This is the first report in distribution of methanogens in this region.

Chemical Embryology: Volume 3
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 56.58 $Joseph Needham (1900 95) was a British biochemist and historian, known for his contributions to scientific research and writings on the history of science in China. First published in 1931, this book forms part of Needham's mammoth three-volume work on the subject of physico-chemical embryology. Broadly speaking, the volumes found their basis in three tasks: the collection from various scientific papers of the facts known about the physico-chemical basis of embryonic development; the relation of these facts to each other and to the facts derived from the labours of investigators in morphological embryology; and, on the basis of the first two tasks, ascertaining whether any generally valid principles were apparent. Illustrative figures and tables are included throughout. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the works of Needham and the development of chemical embryology."

Sedimentary Organic Matter
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 287.07 $A sound understanding of the global carbon cycle requires an appreciation of the various physico-chemical and biological processes that determine the production, distribution, deposition and diagenesis of organic matter in the natural environment. This book is a comprehensive interdisciplinary synthesis of this information, coupled with an organic facies approach based on data from both microscopy and bulk organic geochemistry.

Physical Chemistry Essentials
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 36.01 $This textbook covers the fundamentals of physical chemistry, explaining the concepts in an accessible way and guiding the readers in a step-by-step manner. The contents are broadly divided into two sections: the classical physico-chemical topics (thermodynamics, kinetics, electrochemistry, transport, and catalysis), and the fabric of matter and its interactions with radiation. Particular care has been taken in the presentation of the algebraic parts of physico-chemical concepts, so that the readers can easily follow the explanations and re-work relevant discussion and derivations with pen and paper. The book is accompanied by a rich mathematical appendix. Each chapter includes a selection of (numerical) exercises and problems, so that students can practice and apply the learned topics. An appendix with solutions allows for controlling the learning success. Carefully prepared illustrative color images make this book a great support for teaching physical chemistry to undergraduate students. This textbook mainly addresses undergraduate students in life sciences, biochemistry or engineering, offering them a comprehensive and comprehensible introduction for their studies of physical chemistry. It will also appeal to undergraduate chemistry students as an accessible introduction for their physical chemistry studies.

Reflections on a Theory of Organisms : Holism in Biology
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.38 $Are living organisms―as Descartes argued―just machines? Or is the nature of life such that it can never be fully explained by mechanistic models? In this thought-provoking and controversial book, eminent geophysicist Walter M. Elsasser argues that the behavior of living organisms cannot be reduced to physico-chemical causality. Suggesting that molecular biology today is at the same point as Newtonian physics on the eve of the quantum revolution, Elsasser lays the foundation for a theoretical biology that points the way toward a natural philosophy of organic life.Explicitly repudiating "vitalism" (the notion that the laws of nature need to be modified when applied to living organisms), Elsasser argues instead that the structural complexity of even a single living cell is "transcomputational"―that is, beyond the power of any imaginable system to compute. Beginning from this insight, Elsasser leads the reader through a step-by-step process that ultimately arrives at the conclusion that living and non-living matter are separated by "a no-man's land of irrationality."Trained in Germany as a physicist, Elsasser first pondered the implications of quantum mechanics for biology as early as 1951. The more closely he studied the inherent complexity of life, the more skeptical he became of the reductionist view of organisms as tiny machines. "An organism," he concluded, "is a source of causal chains which cannot be traced beyond a terminal point because they are lost in the unfathomable complexity of the organism." Like the physicist who works within the bounds of an unfathomable universe, Elsasser argues, the biologist must seek answers within a system that is no less unfathomable.

Isotope Hydrology: A Study Of The Water Cycle
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 54.87 $Within the discipline of environmental sciences, the stable-isotope methodology is being increasingly used, especially in the study of the water cycle and of paleo-climatology. This book reviews the natural variability of stable isotopes in the hydrosphere, describing the physico-chemical basis of isotope fractionalism, and applying this knowledge to natural waters as they move through the hydrologic cycle from the ocean to the atmosphere, the biosphere and the lithosphere. It focuses on the processes at the surface-atmosphere and land-biosphere-atmosphere interfaces, since these are the sites of major changes in isotope composition. In response to the increasing awareness of our changing climate, a discussion on the global view of the changing water cycle, in the past and future, concludes up the presentation.
