Physiological, Developmental and Behavioral Effects of Marine Pollution
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 104.58 $Synthesizing decades of work, but up-to-date, this book focuses on organism-level responses to pollutants by marine animals, mainly crustaceans, molluscs, and fishes. Emphasizing effects on physiological processes (feeding/digestion, respiration, osmoregulation), life-cycle (reproduction [including endocrine disruption], embryo development, larval development, developmental processes later in life (growth, regeneration, molting, calcification, cancer), and behaviour, the book also covers bioaccumulation and detoxification of contaminants, and the development of tolerance. The major pollutants covered are metals, organic compounds (oil, pesticides, industrial chemicals), nutrients and hypoxia, contaminants of emerging concern, and ocean acidification. Some attention is also devoted to marine debris and noise pollution.

Physiological Mechanisms of Heat Stress Tolerance in Turfgrass
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.94 $Improving tolerance to heat stress is a major challenge in many crops, especially C3 crops, given the threat of recent global warming. While significant achievements have been made on understanding the molecular and physiological mechanisms to short–term exposure to high temperature, the physiological mechanisms of summer tolerance in fields, which are characterized by prolonged exposure to high temperature stress, are not still well understood. In this study, six experiments were conducted to clarify the physiological mechanisms of tolerance to high temperature stress by comparing between genotypes, populations and different species including C3 and C4 photosynthetic types. Overall, although the complexity of heat tolerance was revealed by the involvement of various mechanisms such as suppression of ROS, scavenging of toxic ROS, and leaf functions, this study definitively showed that the oxidative stress resulting from the excessive production of ROS is the main cause of damages under heat stress.

The Physiological Ecology of Vertebrates: A View from Energetics
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 158.69 $Physiological ecology has grown in importance as an area of biology in the past thirty years and integrates the diverse approaches used in the comparative biology of organisms. Biologists segregate their approaches by technique and concept, but the boundaries among ecology, behavior, anatomy, and physiology are arbitrary and of no significance to organisms. Physiological ecology emphasizes the diversity of not only organisms, but also of solutions to (and evasions of) problems posed by the environment. In a comprehensive and authoritative synthesis of physiological ecology supported by more than 3,100 references, Brian K. McNab demonstrates the intellectual cohesion of the field. To ground his discussion in clearly understood contexts, McNab emphasizes the common thread of energy expenditure throughout the text and limits the discussion to vertebrates, which have familiar habitats and comparatively well-known evolutionary histories.A thorough scientific resource and reference tool, Physiological Ecology of Vertebrates is the first book to cover this complex subject. It will be the standard reference and basis for much future research in this fast-growing field of study.

Physiological Plant Ecology: Ecophysiology and Stress Physiology of Functional Groups
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 64.05 $A richly illustrated text now in its third edition, Physiological Plant Ecology explores the vital processes of plants in interaction with the environment. Focusing on the way different plant species and functional types react in various locations and in all climatic zones, this well-known text has been widely recognised for its clarity and accurate synthesis of a vast body of research. It offers insight into the laws governing the carbon, nitrogen, mineral and water balance as well as the development, vital capacity and adaptability of plants. Entirely revised and enlarged - while keeping the superb illustrations and tables that drew praise in earlier editions - it is ideal for students in biology, ecology and geography, and in agricultural and forestry sciences.

Physiological Systems in Insects
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 58.01 $Physiological Systems in Insects discusses the roles of molecular biology, neuroendocrinology, biochemistry, and genetics in our understanding of insects. All chapters in the new edition are updated, with major revisions to those covering swiftly evolving areas like endocrine, developmental, behavioral, and nervous systems. The new edition includes the latest details from the literature on hormone receptors, behavioral genetics, insect genomics, neural integration, and much more. Organized according to insect physiological functions, this book is fully updated with the latest and foundational research that has influenced understanding of the patterns and processes of insects and is a valuable addition to the collection of any researcher or student working with insects. There are about 10 quintillion insects in the world divided into more than one million known species, and some scientists believe there may be more than 30 million species. As the largest living group on earth, insects can provide us with insight into adaptation, evolution, and survival. The internationally respected third edition of Marc Klowden's standard reference for entomologists and researchers and textbook for insect physiology courses provides the most comprehensive analysis of the systems that make insects important contributors to our environment.Third edition has been updated with new information in almost every chapter and new figuresIncludes an extensive up-to-date bibliography in each chapter Provides a glossary of common entomological and physiological terms
