Plagiarism in Latin Literature
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 31.73 $In response to critics who charged him with plagiarism, Virgil is said to have responded that it was easier to steal Hercules' club than a line from Homer. This was to deny the allegations by implying that Virgil was no plagiarist at all, but an author who had done the hard work of making Homer's material his own. Several other texts and passages in Latin literature provide further evidence for accusations and denials of plagiarism. Plagiarism in Latin Literature explores important questions such as, how do Roman writers and speakers define the practice? And how do the accusations and denials function? Scott McGill moves between varied sources, including Terence, Martial, Seneca the Elder and Macrobius' Virgil criticism to explore these questions. In the process, he offers new insights into the history of plagiarism and related issues, including Roman notions of literary property, authorship and textual reuse.

Pragmatic Plagiarism: Authorship, Profit, and Power (University of Toronto Romance Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 157.42 $In this illuminating study, Marilyn Randall takes on the question of why some cases of literary repetition become great art, while others are relegated to the ignominy of plagiarism. Her discussion reveals that plagiarism is not the objective textual fact it is often taken for, but a phenomenon governed by the norms and conventions of literary reception.Randall turns her focus on the critical debates surrounding cases of perceived plagiarism. Charting the progress of plagiarism in the history of Western letters, her study ranges over centuries, from the notion's first apperance in Roman times to contemporary disputes about intellectual property. Randall considers the development of copyright law and the notion of authorship, presents a wide range of texts, and draws aptly on Foucault's notion of the discursive construction of authorship.Just as Foucault studied insanity to find out what was meant by sanity, says Randall, so the study of plagiarism can reveal what was meant by the term "literary" at various cultural moments. She shows that perceived instances of plagiarism are aspects of an ongoing power struggle in the literary field. And as she reveals, it is not the plagiarist but the accuser who is most concerned with achieving profit and power.

The Little Book of Plagiarism
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 33.94 $A concise, lively, and bracing exploration of an issue bedeviling our cultural landscape–plagiarism in literature, academia, music, art, and film–by one of our most influential and controversial legal scholars. Best-selling novelists J. K. Rowling and Dan Brown, popular historians Doris Kearns Goodwin and Stephen Ambrose, Harvard law professor Charles Ogletree, first novelist Kaavya Viswanathan: all have rightly or wrongly been accused of plagiarism–theft of intellectual property–provoking widespread media punditry. But what exactly is plagiarism? How has the meaning of this notoriously ambiguous term changed over time as a consequence of historical and cultural transformations? Is the practice on the rise, or just more easily detectable by technological advances? How does the current market for expressive goods inform our own understanding of plagiarism? Is there really such a thing as “cryptomnesia,” the unconscious, unintentional appropriation of another’s work? What are the mysterious motives and curious excuses of plagiarists? What forms of punishment and absolution does this “sin” elicit? What is the good in certain types of plagiarism?Provocative, insightful, and extraordinary for its clarity and forthrightness, The Little Book of Plagiarism is an analytical tour de force in small, the work of “one of the top twenty legal thinkers in America” (Legal Affairs), a distinguished jurist renowned for his adventuresome intellect and daring iconoclasm.

Original Copy: Plagiarism and Originality in Nineteenth-Century Literature
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 124.22 $'"Originality" is only plagiarizing from a great many', remarked Rupert Brooke, stealing the line from Voltaire. Questions of originality, and accusations of plagiarism, are as old as literature, but different literary cultures have interpreted the relationship between originality and plagiarism in startlingly dissimilar ways.Original Copy investigates and documents the drastic reappraisal of literary originality and plagiarism which occurred over the course of the nineteenth century: from the heroic visions of original authorship that characterised the 1820s and 1830s, through to the stickle-brick creativity of Oscar Wilde and Lionel Johnson at the century's end. It reveals how ideas of originality and plagiarism were not only a theoretical concern of Victorian commentators on literature, but also provided many important Victorian writers - Eliot, Dickens, Reade, Pater, Wilde, and Lionel Johnson among them - with a creative resource. Moving between numerous different fields of thought and knowledge - literary criticism, the history of science, manuscript culture, anthropology - and written in a supple and elegant style, this book shows that the ideas of originality and plagiarism were the subjects of nineteenth-century literature, as well as what it was subject to.

Martin Luther King Jr Plagiarism Story
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 83.87 $To Theodore Pappa's credit, he further identified that King's 'Letter from a Birmingham Jail'; the 'I Have A Dream Speech'; and his Nobel Prize lecture, also "contained significant portions taken from other sources." Yet a liberal committee investigating the plagiarism determined in a September 1991 report "because King plagiarized only 45 percent of the first half of his dissertation and only 21 percent of the second, the thesis remains a legitimate and 'intelligent contribution to scholarship' about which 'no thought should be given to the revocation of Dr. King's doctoral degree'".(p.103) The tortured reasoning is all too obvious. But the question is Why? To Theodore Pappas's discredit, he did not delve on Martin Luther King's adultery, his preference for white prostitutes, his close association with members of the American Communist Party, or his long history as a scofflaw, e.g. Martin Luther was not his legal name, it was Michael! Mike King continued his scofflaw career as a willing dupe for the political left, as he broke laws down South, ended up in Birmingham jail for his crimes, and encouraged others to do the same. Even the late, great Louise Day Hicks of South Boston told Martin Luther King that he was no representative of the American Negro! But in defense of Mike King, his wanton misappropriation of another man's work could have stemmed from homosexuality and other "human failings" throughout his career, which would make him irrational rather than criminal. And its only fair to Mike King that most of his speeches were written for him by his left-wing entourage. Though Mike King was never a member of the Communist Party, he cooperated with them fully as a willing dupe for the division of America along racial lines (read the Verona decrypts!).
