Pluralism and Liberal Politics
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 76.02 $In this book, Robert Talisse critically examines the moral and political implications of pluralism, the view that our best moral thinking is indeterminate and that moral conflict is an inescapable feature of the human condition. Through a careful engagement with the work of William James, Isaiah Berlin, John Rawls, and their contemporary followers, Talisse distinguishes two broad types of moral pluralism: metaphysical and epistemic. After arguing that metaphysical pluralism does not offer a compelling account of value and thus cannot ground a viable conception of liberal politics, Talisse proposes and defends a distinctive variety of epistemic pluralism. According to this view, certain value conflicts are at present undecidable rather than intrinsic. Consequently, epistemic pluralism countenances the possibility that further argumentation, enhanced reflection, or the acquisition of more information could yield rational resolutions to the kinds of value conflicts that metaphysical pluralists deem irresolvable as such. Talisse’s epistemic pluralism hence prescribes a politics in which deep value conflicts are to be addressed by ongoing argumentation and free engagement among citizens; the epistemic pluralist thus sees liberal democracy is the proper political response to ongoing moral disagreement.

Pluralism: Against the Demand for Consensus (Clarendon Library of Logic and Philosophy)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 79.17 $Nicholas Rescher presents a critical reaction against two currently influential tendencies of thought. On the one hand, he rejects the facile relativism that pervades contemporary social and academic life. On the other hand, he opposes the rationalism inherent in neo-contractarian theory--both in the idealized communicative-contract version promoted in continental European political philosophy by J;urgen Habermas, and in the idealized social contract version of the theory of political justice promoted in the Anglo-American context by John Rawls. Against such tendencies, Rescher's pluralist approach takes a more realistic and pragmatic line, eschewing the convenient recourse of idealization in cognitive and practical matters. Instead of a utopianism that looks to a uniquely perfect order that would prevail under ideal conditions, he advocates incremental improvements within the framework of arrangements that none of us will deem perfect but that all of us "can live with." Such an approach replaces the yearning for an unattainable consensus with the institution of pragmatic arrangements in which the community will acquiesce--not through agreeing on their optimality, but through a shared recognition among the dissonant parties that the available options are even worse.

Pluralism in Theory and Practice: Richard McKeon and American Philosophy (Vanderbilt Library of American Philosophy (Hardcover))
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.77 $Unknown to many, unintelligible to some, Richard McKeon (1900-1985) is considered by those familiar with his work to be among the most important of all twentieth-century philosophers. In a career that spanned seven decades, McKeon published eleven books and more than 150 articles, inspired and intimidated generations of students (among them Richard Rorty, Wayne Booth, and Paul Goodman), and received most of the honors available to an American philosopher. As a teacher and administrator at the University of Chicago, he was instrumental in founding its general education program and initiating the first interdisciplinary program in the humanities. His achievements outside the university included a major part in developing the first cultural and philosophical projects of UNESCO. Fearsome in the classroom, he is renowned for his scholarly brilliance; the problems he thought important, however, did not occupy his colleagues' attention. Ironically, they are now the very issues that present-day philosophers grapple with, namely pluralism, the relationship of philosophy to the history of philosophy, rhetoric and philosophy, the diversity of culture, and the problems of communication and community. Pluralism in Theory and Practice not only brings McKeon to the attention of contemporary philosophers and students; it also puts his theories into practice. Some of the essays explicate aspects of McKeon's thought or situate him in the context of American intellectual and practical engagement. Others take the concerns he raised as starting points for inquiries into urgent contemporary problems, or, in some cases, for reexamining McKeon's work as fertile ground for shaping the direction of new investigation.

Pluralism and American Public Education: No One Way to School (Education Policy)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.49 $This book argues that the structure of public education is a key factor in the failure of America's public education system to fulfill the intellectual, civic, and moral aims for which it was created. The book challenges the philosophical basis for the traditional common school model and defends the educational pluralism that most liberal democracies enjoy. Berner provides a unique theoretical pathway that is neither libertarian nor state-focused and a pragmatic pathway that avoids the winner-takes-all approach of many contemporary debates about education. For the first time in nearly one hundred fifty years, changing the underlying structure of America’s public education system is both plausible and possible, and this book attempts to set out why and how.

Pluralism and Progressives: Hull House and the New Immigrants, 1890-1919
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 56.93 $The settlement house movement, launched at the end of the nineteenth century by men and women of the upper middle class, began as an attempt to understand and improve the social conditions of the working class. It gradually came to focus on the "new immigrants"—mainly Italians, Slavs, Greeks, and Jews—who figured so prominently in this changing working class. Hull House, one of the first and best-known settlement houses in the United States, was founded in September 1889 on Chicago's West Side by Jane Addams and Ellen G. Starr. In a major new study of this famous institution and its place in the movement, Rivka Shpak Lissak reassesses the impact of Hull House on the nationwide debate over the place of immigrants in American society.

Murder of Pluralism: Coping with Democratic Oppression in South Asia
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 49.16 $This book is a compilation of academic papers presented at the seminar held at the United Nations, Geneva, Switzerland, on September 19, 2013, under the chairmanship of Dr Charles Graves. Academic papers were presented on the gross human rights violations and abuses in South Asia, with particular reference to the Sikhs of Punjab and other minorities of South Asia. It is indeed gratifying to see so much passion and work put into this book. I have especially known the Sikh authors and their tireless work for a very long time. Each chapter has authentic and well-researched material which portrays an honest and forthright view of the current human rights situation pertaining to various ethno-religious groups in South Asia. The book deserves wide circulation and is a must read for any serious student of history, politics, anthropology, religion, social studies, and other areas. This book sheds light on the modus operandi of the largest democracy in Asia vis-à-vis its minorities Faith groups. The existing democratic structure is really putrid, requiring major changes because the near and long term future does not bode well for a multitude of ethno-religious groups whose woes of suffering are being trampled on daily. I have no hesitation in recommending this book without reservations to all lovers of liberty and justice but especially those who cherish freedom from any kind of tyranny. Gulbarg Singh Chairperson - 2014 World Sikh Council – America Region
