Poland, 1918-1945
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 71.19 $Based on extensive range of Polish, British, German, Jewish and Ukranian primary and secondary sources, this work provides an objective appraisal of the inter-war period. Peter Stachura demonstrates how the Republic overcame giant obstacles at home and abroad to achieve consolidation as an independent state in the early 1920s, made relative economic progress, created a coherent social order, produced an outstanding cultural scene, advanced educational opportunity, and adopted constructive and even-handed policies towards its ethnic minorities. Without denying the defeats suffered by the Republic, Peter Stachura demonstrates that the fate of Poland after 1945, with the imposition of an unwanted, Soviet-dominated Communist system, was thoroughly undeserved.

Poland: The First Thousand Years (Paperback or Softback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.52 $Since its beginnings, Poland has been a moving target, geographically as well as demographically, and the very definition of who is a Pole has been in flux. In the late medieval and early modern periods, the country grew to be the largest in continental Europe, only to be later wiped off the map for more than a century. The Polish phoenix that rose out of the ashes of World War I was obliterated by the joint Nazi-Soviet occupation that began with World War II. The postwar entity known as Poland was shaped and controlled by the Soviet Union. Yet even under these constraints, Poles persisted in their desire to wrest from their oppressors a modicum of national dignity and, ultimately, managed to achieve much more than that. Poland: The First Thousand Years is a sweeping account designed to amplify major figures, moments, milestones, and turning points in Polish history. These include important battles and illustrious individuals, alliances forged by marriages and choices of religious denomination, and meditations on the likes of the Polish battle slogan "for our freedom and yours" that resounded during the Polish fight for independence in the long 19th century and echoed in the Solidarity period of the late 20th century. The experience of oppression helped Poles to endure and surmount various challenges in the 20th century, and Poland's demonstration of strength was a model for other peoples seeking to extract themselves from foreign yoke. Patrice Dabrowski's work situates Poland and the Poles within a broader European framework that locates this multiethnic and multidenominational region squarely between East and West. This illuminating chronicle will appeal to general readers, and will be of special interest to those of Polish descent who will appreciate Poland's longstanding republican experiment.

Polands Security
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.00 $The book is result of the research project entitled "Key Determinants of Poland's Security in Early 21st Century." The participants of the project are representatives of various academic centres and government institutions. One of the key products of the project is the present publication. The first of its key objectives is to present various aspects of the contemporary security of Poland, such as the military, political, economic, and social aspects, as well as the interdependence between 'hard security' and 'soft security'. The second objective is to demonstrate the correlations between the status of security and the sense of security in Poland. The third objective is to use theoretical deliberations on security in practice, for example based on the pentagonal model of security presented in this publication. Professor Sebastian Wojciechowski and Professor Anna Potyrala had the excellent idea to supplement the scholarly literature in the field of security studies with a unique work - a comprehensive analysis of a specific problem, namely the security of Poland at the start of the new century. This was not an easy task as most researchers focus on the systematic of international (mostly Western) theoretical works and the infrequent publications in this context most often take the form of historical outlines. This makes the publication all the more a success on the part of the Editors and highly qualified Contributors, as they analyzed and diagnosed the relevant subject matter of their research and thus met the objectives presented in the introduction.
