Joseph E, Johnston: A Civil War Biography (Paperback or Softback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 26.56 $"Riveting. . . . A thoughtful biography." ―New York Times Book Review General Joseph E. Johnston was in command of Confederate forces at the South's first victory―Manassas in July 1861―and at its last―Bentonville in April 1965. Many of his contemporaries considered him the greatest southern field commander of the war; others ranked him second only to Robert E. Lee. But Johnston was an enigmatic man. His battlefield victories were never decisive. He failed to save Confederate forces under siege by Grant at Vicksburg, and he retreated into Georgia in the face of Sherman's march. His intense feud with Jefferson Davis ensured the collapse of the Confederacy's western campaign in 1864 and made Johnston the focus of a political schism within the government. Now in this rousing narrative of Johnston's dramatic career, Craig L. Symonds gives us the first rounded portrait of the general as a public and private man.

Joseph Babinski: A Biography
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 60.00 $Joseph Babinski's contributions to French medicine have been well-documented, but there has yet to be a significant and an authoritative biography of him--until now. Two French physicians, Jaques Philippon and Jacques Poirier, analyze Babinski's great scientific achievements, explore his unique family history, and publish, for the first time, a complete bibliography of his publications. The "Babinski sign," considered as his greatest diagnostic achievement, is typically one of the first neurological tests performed by a specialist or primary care physician to determine the existence of an injury to the pyramidal tract. Joseph Babinski, however, is more than just the "Babinski sign" that has made him famous and revered. As the authors explain, he was an early contributor to the fields of cutaneous and tendinous reflexes, cerebellar and vestibular semiology, hysteria and pithitiasm, localization of spinal cord compressions, and the birth of French neurosurgery. This book chronicles his family's emigration from Poland to France, his tutelage and early career under great teachers such as Alfred Vulpian, Victor Cornil, and Jean-Martin Charcot at the Hopital de la Salpetriere in Paris, his methods and observations during 27 years as department head at La Pitie, as well as the close and unique relationship with his brother, Henri, the well-known Ali-Bab. Finally, Babinski's life and times can be accessed in one fresh and intriguing book!

They Called Him Mallam: The Biography of Joseph Ummel, a Pioneer Missionary to Northern Nigeria, West Africa
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 26.24 $Born February 22, 1897 Joe Ummel grew up four miles south of Elkhart, Indiana, on a potato farm with orchards and a Holstein dairy herd-his father, John Ummel Sr., a beekeeper. Their family assisted orphanages in Armenia (interests of Joe's maternal grandfather). Mealtime often included ministers and missionaries from other lands. His missionary work sent Joe to Nigeria where there were great challenges for a young man. In Nigeria only three months, Joe trekked up-country at the invitation of the British Government, entering Kontagora province as the first white man. His home, a grass shelter. Calabash across the swollen river with Joe; ride on the back of his bicycle, and in his canoe down the Niger River through the rapids; feel his compassion as he listens to their stories, legends; watch Joe become the beloved and trusted Mallam (teacher) in the Northland as he builds three mission compounds, and cycles to the many surrounding villages. Accompany Joe on the SS El Nil-a WWII crossing in May-June 1941-and glimpse WWII from Nigeria's point of view. Then catch-up on the reports of the United Missionary Church of Africa (UMCA), and the mission today. You'll love it, Ta Zuru.

A Danish Jew in West Africa. Wulf Joseph Wulff Biography And Letters 1836-1842
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 63.19 $Wulff's life history is of considerable interest in itself. In her biographical essay (Part I) Selena Axelrod Winsnes portrays him as a 'marginal man': being a Jew in Denmark at the beginning of the 19th century was to some extent an uphill struggle for those who sought public recognition, and Wulff did not escape discrimination in his administrative career at Christiansborg either, although special circumstances allowed him to hold important positions, and yet, only for the short term. Paradoxically, on his arrival to the Gold Coast Wulff - as a Jew - was placed in a middle position in the racial hierarchy dominating the mind-set of his superiors in Copenhagen ñ between Africans and Europeans. In many respects he shared the fate of Euro-Africans, straddling two worlds and being 'sealed off' from the top echelons of the European establishments on the Coast. This book comprises two parts. The first is a biographical presentation of Wulff Joseph Wulff , a Danish Jew. It is an essay concerning the last six years of his life, spent on the Gold Coast of West Africa, based on letters he wrote to his family in Denmark. Those letters were published in 1917 as Da Guinea var Dansk [When Guinea was Danish], by Carl Behrens, a member of his family in Denmark. The second part of the book is an edited translation of the letters from Danish into English.

Joseph E. Brown of Georgia (Southern Biography Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 38.00 $Joseph Brown was a pivotal figure in southern history and a prototype of a new breed of southern politician in the mid-nineteenth century-the hill country newcomer who was considered to represent the “common man.”As governor of Georgia from 1857 to 1865, Brown enthusiastically supported the Confederacy in the early years of the war, though he refused to sacrifice what he considered states’ rights to the interest of a Confederate victory. Brown was constantly at odds with Jefferson Davis concerning Georgia’s supply of Confederate troops and was openly hostile, to the .point of urging Davis’ removal over the matters of conscription and the suspension of habeas corpus. When defeat came for the South, Brown accepted the collapse of the old economic order as quickly as he did the loss of slavery and states’ rights. He advocated a new South and amassed a fortune in the development of real estate, mining, and railroads. He turned Republican and promoted congressional Reconstruction measures, temporarily losing his influence in Georgia. But in 1871 he rejoined the Democratic party and served in the United States Senate from 1880 to 1891.Here is the first full-scale biography of a man of meager education and limited political experience who worked his way from the North Georgia mountains to the positions of governor and United States senator. Drawing on previously unavailable documents, Parks captures the mood of Georgia as well as the personality of this astute and controversial politician.
