This was the period when much of Italy shook off what was left of Byzantine control, when the Papacy began to develop its temporal sovereignty, and when the Lombard kingdom collapsed and the Franks began to involve themselves in the affairs of Italy. The most notable event of the period was probably the coronation of Charlemagne as Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III - an event that was to have repercussions throughout the rest of the Middle Ages.
