The Theme of IJCNLP 2005: "NLP with Kimchee", a Conference with a Unique Flavor Welcometo IJCNLP 2005,thesecondannualconferenceof theAsian Federation ofNaturalLanguageProcessing(AFNLP). Followingthesuccessofthe?rstc- ference held in the beautiful cityof Sanya,Hainan Island,China, in March2004, IJCNLP 2005 is held in yet another attractive Asian resort, namely Jeju Island in Korea, on October 11-13, 2005 - the ideal place and season for appreciating mugunghwa, the rose of Sharon, and the national ?ower of Korea. On behalf of the Program Committee, we are excited to present these p- ceedings, which collect together the papers accepted for oral presentation at the conference. We received 289 submissions in total, from 32 economies all over the world: 77% from Asia, 11% from Europe, 0.3% from Africa, 1.7% from Australasia and 10% from North America. We are delighted to report that the popularity of IJCNLP has signi?cantly increased this year, with an increase of 37% from the 211 submissions from 16 economies and 3 continents received for IJCNLP 2004. With such a large number of submissions, the paper selection process was not easy. With the very considerable assistance of our 12 area chairs - Claire Gardent,Jamie Henderson,Chu-Ren Huang,Kentaro Inui, GaryLee, Kim-Teng Lua, Helen Meng, Diego Moll´ a, Jian-Yun Nie, Dragomir Radev, Manfred Stede, andMing Zhou- andthe 133internationalreviewers,90papers(31%)were- cepted for oral presentation and 62 papers (21%) were recommended as posters.

This Proceedings volume contains extended abstracts of all the papers presented at the Microscopy and Microanalysis 2002 meeting held in Québec City, Québec, Canada on August 4-9, 2002. This meeting was a joint event comprising the 60th Annual Meeting of the Microscopy Society of America, the 36th Annual Meeting of the Microbeam Analysis Society, the 29th Annual Meeting of the Microscopy Society of Canada/Société de Microscopie du Canada and the 35th Annual Meeting of the International Metallographic Society. The 11th international conference on Inductive Logic Programming, ILP2001, was held in Strasbourg, France, September 9-11, 2001. ILP2001 was co-located withthe3rdinternationalworkshoponLogic,Learning,andLanguage(LLL2001), and nearly co-located with the joint 12th European Conference on Machine Learning (ECML2001) and 5th European conference on Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (PKDD2001). Continuing a series of international conferences devoted to Inductive Logic Programming and Relational Learning, ILP2001 is the central annual event for researchersinterestedinlearningstructuredknowledgefromstructuredexamples and background knowledge. One recent one major challenge for ILP has been to contribute to the ex- nentialemergenceofDataMining,andtoaddressthehandlingofmulti-relational databases. On the one hand, ILP has developed a body of theoretical results and algorithmicstrategiesforexploringrelationaldata,essentiallybutnotexclusively from a supervised learning viewpoint. These results are directly relevant to an e?cient exploration of multi-relational databases. Ontheotherhand,DataMiningmightrequirespeci?crelationalstrategiesto be developed, especially with regard to the scalability issue. The near-colocation of ILP2001 with ECML2001-PKDD2001 was an incentive to increase cro- fertilization between the ILP relational savoir-faire and the new problems and learning goals addressed and to be addressed in Data Mining. Thirty-seven papers were submitted to ILP, among which twenty-one were selected and appear in these proceedings. Several - non-disjoint - trends can be observed, along an admittedly subjective clustering. On the theoretical side, a new mode of inference is proposed by K. Inoue, analog to the open-ended mode of Bayesian reasoning (where the frontier - tween induction and abduction wanes). New learning re?nement operators are proposed by L. Badea, while R. Otero investigates negation-handling settings.

This book presents written versions of the eight lectures given during the AMS Short Course held at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Washington, D.C. The objective of this course was to share with the scientific community the many exciting mathematical challenges arising from the new field of quantum computation and quantum information science. The course was geared toward demonstrating the great breadth and depth of this mathematically rich research field. Interrelationships with existing mathematical research areas were emphasized as much as possible. Moreover, the course was designed so that participants with little background in quantum mechanics would, upon completion, be prepared to begin reading the research literature on quantum computation and quantum information science. Based on audience feedback and questions, the written versions of the lectures have been greatly expanded, and supplementary material has been added. The book features an overview of relevant parts of quantum mechanics with an introduction to quantum computation, including many potential quantum mechanical computing devices; introduction to quantum algorithms and quantum complexity theory; in-depth discussion on quantum error correcting codes and quantum cryptography; and finally, exploration into diverse connections between quantum computation and various areas of mathematics and physics.

The clamor for Bibles in the vernacular flourished within lay renewal movements of the late 14th century, including groups like the Brethren and Sisters of the Common Life. In the early 16th century, humanists like Erasmus and Lefevre d'Etaples stimulated vernacular Bible reading. As the Protestant Reformation became established, lay Bibles were produced on a large scale. In reaction to this development, Catholic theologians issued 'orthodox' Bible translations in various vernaculars based on the Vulgate. In sum, from the 15th to the 18th century, editions from various confessional or ideological backgrounds appeared throughout Western Europe. Of course, the invention and spread of the printing press greatly enhanced the distribution of these editions. The essays collected in this volume approach Lay Bibles in Europe 1450-1800 from various perspectives, including the history of books, art history and church history.

This book consitutes the refereed joint proceedings of the First European Workshop on Evolutionary Computation in Image Analysis and Signal Processing, EvoIASP '99 and of the First European Workshop on Evolutionary Telecommunications, EuroEcTel '99, held in Göteborg, Sweden in May 1999. The 18 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the volume. The book presents state-of-the-art research results applying techniques from evolutionary computing in the specific application areas.
