This book is a wide-ranging survey of the rise of mass movements for democracy and workers’ rights in northern England from 1789 to 1848. It is a provocative narrative of the closing down of public space and dispossession from place. It offers historical parallels for contemporary debates about protests in public space and democracy and anti-globalisation movements. In response to fears of revolution from 1789 to 1848, the British government and local authorities prohibited mass working-class political meetings and societies. Protesters faced the privatisation of public space. The ‘Peterloo Massacre’ of 1819 marked a turning point. Radicals, trade unions and the Chartists fought back by challenging their exclusion from public spaces, creating their own sites and eventually constructing their own buildings or emigrating to America. New evidence of protest in rural areas of northern England, including rural Luddism, is also uncovered.

This book examines the reactions of Orthodox British Jews and their leaders to the Holocaust as it unfolded in the years 1942-1945. It focuses on the efforts of Solomon Schonfeld, who was the leader of the ultra-orthodox Haredi community in Britain at the time, and concentrates on the community’s efforts on behalf of the beleaguered Jews on the Continent rather than the assistance offered to refugees in Britain. Through extensive research into Schonfeld’s papers, British public and municipal archives and those of the Agudat Israel and Vaad Ha Hatzala, the author has made an important contribution to the history of this period. Many of these documents have not been analysed until now. Careful, extensive research, coupled with a keen understanding of human nature, has enabled the author to paint a vivid picture of a segment of Jewry that was desperate to assist its brethren, but was faced with almost insurmountable obstacles.

Inspired by Charles Perrow, Jay M. Gould and Helen Caldicott, Judith Evered shares her personal tragedy related to the 1957 explosion at Windscale Nuclear Power Plant in England. Her memoir recounts the courage, friendships and common ground that united activists throughout the country in planning and executing what is known as the 1981 blockade of Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. With all engineering feats, we must take precautionary action when reasonable threats to human safety exist. The seismically active foundation on which Diablo is sited and the questionable safety measures surrounding nuclear power initiated the largest act of nonviolent civil disobedience in U.S. history. A large power corporation, Pacific Gas & Electric and the Nuclear Regulatory Committee conspired to keep the risks of Diablo hidden. Thankfully, an educated populace directed by the Abalone Alliance earnestly set out to prove PG&E and the NRC inadequate in their ability to safeguard against potential terrorist attacks. Land and sea ventures onto the power plant's property reveal disturbing vulnerabilities. Doctors, engineers, teachers, mothers, fathers, children and others were among the peaceful protestors who were not always greeted with the same nonviolent attitude. One almost feels like a part of the action, possibly being handcuffed, dragged and thrown into a detainment camp with Jackson Browne, protest organizers and the many members of colorfully named affinity groups. Police officers and national guardsmen were employed to keep the "bums off the street" as Ronald Reagan called them in 1970. Valuable strategies and tactics are shared with the reader in addition to a history that could easily pass with the generation. If civil disobedience has been shelved in an effort to keep a clear record, this book may counter that by enlivening one of the most democratic forms of assembly: unified nonviolent direct action- real democracy. The hope for peace and security is revived.

The Hebrew Bible contains many examples of protest or complaint against God. There are classic cases in the psalms of individual lament, but we find the same attitude in community complaint psalms, in the prophetic challenges to God, and in the Book of Job. And yet, after the exile, the complaint tradition was largely suppressed or marginalized. In this imaginative book, Morrow asks the unheard of question, Why? A shift in the religious imagination of early Judaism had taken place, he argues, spearheaded by the psychology of trauma and by international politics. A magnification of divine transcendence downgraded the intercessory role of the prophet, controlled the raw pain of exile (Lamentations, Second Isaiah), and led to intransigent refusal of the logic of lament (the friends and Yahweh in Job). The theology of complaint was eventually overshadowed by the piety of penitence and praise (the Dead Sea Scrolls). Modern readers of the Hebrew Bible are not obliged to assent to the loss of lament, nevertheless. Ours is an age when the potency of the biblical complaints against God is being newly appropriated. Although the transcendental imagination of Western culture itself is moving into eclipse, a heightened individual consciousness has emerged. There may still be life, therefore, in the ancient prayer pattern of arguing with God, which assumes that worshippers have rights with God as well as duties, that the Creator has obligations to the creation as well as prerogatives. This stylish intellectual history will be welcomed for its scope, its panache and its theological engagement.

Drawing from more than 120 newspapers, published between 1968 and 1970, this study explores the emergence of an anti-militarist subculture within the U.S. armed services. These activists took the position that individual GIs could best challenge their subordination by working in concert with like-minded servicemen through GI movement organizations whose behaviors and activities were then publicized in these underground newspapers. In examining this movement, Lewes focuses on their treatment of power and authority within the armed forces and how this mirrored the wider and more inclusive relations of power and authority in the United States. He argues that this opposition among servicemen was the primary motivation for the United States to withdraw from Vietnam.This first book length study of GI-published underground newspapers sheds light on the utility of alternative media for movements of social change, and provides information on how these movements are shaped by the environments in which they emerge. Lewes asserts that one cannot understand GI opposition as an extension of the civilian antiwar movement. Instead, it was the product of an embedded environment, whose inhabitants had been drafted or had enlisted to avoid the draft. They came from cities and small towns whose populations were often polarized between those who wholeheartedly supported the war and those who became progressively more critical of the need for Americans to be involved in Vietnam.
