Quid pro quo: Studies in the History of Drugs: 367 (Variorum Collected Studies)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 42.67 $All too often ancient herbal and other remedies have been dismissed as ’simply’ folklore, of no relevance to medical science. John Riddle’s approach, however, has been to explore the history of drugs with the hypothesis that ancient and medieval medicines were effective - a methodology that he expounds in the final essay (hitherto unpublished). Indeed, he shows, both from detailed case-studies and from the comparison of the listings given by classical and medieval authorities with those in modern pharmacopoeias, that our ancestors had discovered and made effective use of many of the drugs used in medicine today, from antiseptics and analgesics to oral contraceptives, even chemotherapy for cancer. There is the suggestion, therefore, that more careful examination and identification of the drugs used in the past may reveal chemicals that can be exploited anew. Central to these studies is the investigation of how a drug was used and how knowledge about it was transmitted - and perhaps also distorted in the process - from the Classical world through the Middle Ages. K Foundation Burn a Million Quid
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 82.72 $In the early hours of the 23 August 1994, in a boathouse on Jura, off the west coast of Scotland, the trustees of the K Foundation, Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty burned the assets of the foundation - 1 million pounds in 50 pound notes. The money was the result of Drummond and Cauty's enormously successful ventures in pop music, first as the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu (the JAMs), then as the Timelords, and latterly as one of the most successful bands of the late 1980s and early 1990s, the KLF. After disbanding the KLF in 1992 Drummond and Cauty set up the K Foundation. Their best-known foray into the art world was the presentation of 40,000 to Rachel Whiteread for the worst body of art of 1993. Whiteread had been awarded the 20,000 Turner prize a few days earlier. The burning of the 1 million was filmed and a year later Drummond and Cauty returned to Jura to show the people of the island the film and to inaugurate a series of screenings and discussions - all in an attempt to understand just what the K Foundation had done. Was it art? What was the morality of the burning? Was it a publicity stunt? ? This book is a further exploration of the act, with film stills and a selection of the statements, letters and verbal responses of those attending the screenings and associated activities.

Cybernetics, Second Edition: or Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 33.67 $CYBERNETICS, in its authoritative and final Second Edition, and at last available in a modern, highly-legible, and library-quality presentation - not a "facsimile edition" (photocopy) of the printing as are cheap recreations. Instead, the Quid Pro Books edition allows the reader to experience the best version of the work in a contemporary but affordable hardcover printing, not just as a facsimile or reprint knockoff. A quality, affordable ebook version of this classic work is also available from Quid Pro Books. · CYBERNETICS is on virtually everyone's short list of the most important and influential nonfiction books of the last century. First published by MIT mathematics professor Norbert Wiener in 1948, and later in its Second Edition in 1961, this groundbreaking account of systems, thought processes, AI, and the use of "feedback" foreshadowed intelligent and replicating machines, complex organizational organisms, and the physiology and failure of the human nervous system. Its 1961 Second Edition is the same version republished in many printed paperback editions since (such as the 1965 paperback printing by MIT Press), and represents the culmination of the author's work on this project. · No small wonder this has been widely read by scientists and lay readers alike, to understand the origins and future of computers, wider communication pathways, the use of feedback to refine actions and thought processes, and the logic and math behind non-linear systems. Educated readers know the term "cybernetics"; this book coined the term and created an entire field of interdisciplinary study that resonates today, and led to the "cyber"-everything that we know. · Norbert Wiener, known as the "Father of Cybernetics," has influenced such fields of study as game theory, system theory, sociology, psychology and neuroscience, modern philosophy, organizational theory, and even architecture.

The Right to Privacy (Hardback or Cased Book)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.73 $Warren and Brandeis's famous and impactful "The Right to Privacy" is presented in a library-quality hardback edition, featuring a modern Foreword by Steven Alan Childress, J.D., Ph.D., a senior law professor at Tulane University. Includes photos and rare news clippings. Part of the Legal Legends Series by Quid Pro Books, in its 125th Anniversary Edition. * The most influential piece of legal scholarship, many scholars say, is this 1890 Harvard Law Review article by two Boston lawyers (one of whom later became a legendary Supreme Court Justice). Warren and Brandeis created -- by cleverly weaving strands of precedent, policy, and logic -- the legal concept of privacy and the power of legal protection for that right. Their clear and effective prose stands the test of time, and influenced such modern notions as "inviolate personality" and law's "elasticity." They saw the threat of new technology. * Most of all, they asserted the fundamental "right to be let alone," and its implications to modern law are profound. Their privacy concept has grown over the decades, now raising issues about abortion, drug testing, surveillance, sexual orientation, free speech, the "right to die," and medical confidentiality. All these spin-offs trace their origins to this master work. It is simply one of the most significant parts of the modern canon of law, politics, and sociology. * The extensive new Foreword by Professor Childress shares not only this import and effect, but also the fascinating back story behind the article. Its origins are found in Warren's own prickly experiences with the press and the paparazzi of the day -- famously, after their reports about, and intrusive photographs of, his family weddings. There is simply no edition like this one: modern, explained, illustrated, and well-presented in a highly legible font. The original pagination of the article is retained in inserts, to maintain continuity with and referencing of the original.

Coining Corruption: The Making of the American Campaign Finance System
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 60.26 $In the wake of Watergate, Congress passed the Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA) in an effort to prevent the corruption of future elections. The U.S. Supreme Court, in Buckley v. Valeo (1976), defined corruption as quid pro quo—“get for giving”—meaning Congress could only regulate the kind of corruption that had occurred if a campaign contributor received political favors from the candidate. This definition has since shaped and limited efforts at campaign finance reform, often with ironic and unintended consequences. By shifting the focus to the source and amount of contributions, the justices in the Buckley decision ignored disparities in funding and the resulting ability of particular candidates to dominate communication channels. In Coining Corruption, legal and political historian Kurt Hohenstein provides a hitherto untold story about the successes and limitations of political reform. From 1876 until 1976, lawmakers and courts permitted regulation that potentially infringed upon freedom of speech: they understood corruption as the conversion of economic power into political power. In their view, corruption existed if a candidateÆs unfettered campaign spending overwhelmed other voices and limited real deliberation. Yet, as Hohenstein shows, BuckleyÆs limited “quid pro quo” definition ignores these considerations. Following the evolution of the campaign finance system through the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2001 and the Supreme CourtÆs decisions in McConnell v. FEC (2001) and Landell v. Sorrell (2006), Hohenstein calls for a return to a broad, historical understanding of corruption. American democracy demands regulation of the sources and amounts of campaign funding in order to prevent a monopoly on the vehicles of political debate. Those interested in reform politics, public policy, constitutional history, and Congress will appreciate this groundbreaking study.

Falling Through A Novel
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.32 $Who is that man peering through an iron telescope outside Alexandra Palace? Ray Davies? Matthew Arnold? Graham Greene? Graham Bartlett travels to his mystery assignations with teenagers, and for a few quid improves their GCSE homework. What led him to this lonely, peripatetic existence? Years earlier he had lived in various other guises, half-remembered as he criss-crosses swathes of suburban north London. Murders are committed. Riots explode. Model gliders are launched. Lovers part. Graham continues doggedly on his rounds, finding sustenance in his glancing encounters with real and imagined others. Turks. Africans. West Indians. Kosovans. Falling Through is a haunted, darkly funny portrayal of a side of London that hasn't often found its way into fiction.

The Essence of Rhetoric in Disney Music (Paperback or Softback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 48.87 $This book will introduce you to the basic history and concepts of Rhetoric, and demonstrate those concepts by allowing you to experience the rhetoric in the music at Walt Disney World. Starting with the prayer theory of Homer and the ancient Greeks, we learn that Flattery, Quid pro Quo, and appeals for consistency are persuasive. Then Plato coins the term "rhetoric," but uses it in a negative sense. His student, Aristotle, writes the most important work on Rhetoric in history, emphasizing ethics, emotion, and logic. We believe some things just because we trust the word of someone else. Aristotle also taught the three basic uses of rhetoric: in the courts, in the political assemblies, and in the culture. The Romans added the 5 basic considerations of Rhetoric: Invention, Arrangement, Style, Memory, and Delivery. Contemporary rhetoricians, Kenneth Burke, Chaim Perelman, and Stephen Toulmin add concepts like identification, cultural values, and the two-sided message. Disney provides musical experiences of all of these. Everyone is familiar with Disney Music. But, few have analyzed what types of persuasive messages are communicated through Disney music. Find out for yourself what the rest of the world is being persuaded by listening to the music. Take, for example, the song "Two Brothers" in The American Adventure. Is it pro-war or anti-war? How would you analyze the rhetoric of such music? This book explains the methods rhetoricians have been using for thousands of years.
