Railroading Economics : The Creation of the Free Market Mythology
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.38 $Most economic theory assumes a pure capitalism of perfect competition. This book is a penetrating critique of the rhetoric and practice of conventional economic theory. It explores how even in the United States—the most capitalist of countries—the market has always been subject to numerous constraints. Perelman examines the way in which these constraints have been defended by such figures as Henry Ford, J. P. Morgan, and Herbert Hoover, and were indeed essential to the expansion of U.S. capitalism. In the process, he rediscovers the critical element in conservative thought—the “forgotten traditions of railroad economics”—that has been lost in the neoliberal present. This important and original historical reconstruction points the way to a discipline of economics freed from the mythology of the market.

Railroading along the waterfront
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 5.87 $Railroading Along The Waterfront will take you on a photographic journey to key places where rails and water meet. You'll be treated to views of the compact terminal railroads in New York, where the only connection to the outside is by carfloat. You'll see a sampling of the reserved ports in the Canadian Maritimes and New England, as well as the bulk terminals of the Great Lakes and the modern container traffic of the West Coast. You'll also get a glimpse of the relaxed pace of railroading and commerce along the continent's rivers and lakes where railroads first ferried across and then bridged the waters. This book will also give model railroad enthusiasts tips on how to add the fascination of waterfront railroading to a layout. The photo-paced modeling chapter includes sections on easy ways to make water, the basics of carfloat operation, and the workings of Great Lakes ore docks, not to mention photos of waterfront industries and track layouts for pier districts.

Railroading Around Hazard and Perry County (KY) (Images of Rail)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.99 $Besides the 1795 settling of what later became Hazard, Kentucky, and the establishment of Perry County in 1821, no other event has had the historical significance of the coming of the railroad. Until the track-laying train came through the tunnel north of town and stopped briefly for a celebration, Hazard was landlocked, and the townspeople had never heard the earthshaking sound of the train whistle. Before the railroad, the river was their road. The only few household conveniences known to these isolated people were laboriously brought up the river on push boats. Many materials used to build the railroad were also transported on flatboats. As a bridge and tunnel were built, and a passage was made for the engine that carried the railroad ties, John G. Kinner documented the change with his camera. Images of Rail: Railroading Around Hazard and Perry County features John G. Kinner’s vivid and historic\photographs and others from the Bobby Davis Museum collection.
