Der Mythos vom Raub der Europa hat sich seine Aktualität bis heute bewahrt. Schon in der Antike ragt die Geschichte von der Entf hrung der phönizischen Königstochter aus der Vielzahl der Mythen hervor, da sich mit ihr die Bezeichnung des Erdteils verbindet. Die Studie geht der mythischen Überlieferung des Europamythos von den ersten griechischen und römischen Belegen nach und untersucht kanonische ebenso wie noch ganz unerforschte Textquellen in philologischen und literarhistorischen Einzelanalysen. Vorgestellt werden rund 150 epochenspezifische Aktualisierungen des Mythos in den volkssprachlichen Literaturen der westlichen Romania seit dem 14. Jahrhundert bis in die Gegenwart.
