The Medal of Honor, one of the world's most highly revered military decorations, has been awarded to 3,457 men and one woman since its inception on December 21, 1861. This honor is bestowed upon those individuals who demonstrate courage in a life-threatening situation, who put their own lives at risk for the sake of others, and who display valor above and beyond the call of duty. Each entry chronicles the acts of bravery and courage that led to the serviceman's receiving this honor. Beginning with a brief history of the Medal of Honor, the book is then divided into eight sections covering every major conflict from the Civil War through the Vietnam War. An appendix of the number of medals awarded by wars and campaigns, a bibliography, and an index are included.

Osprey's examination of the recipients of the Knight's Cross with Diamonds award of World War II (1939-1945). On 1 September 1939, the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was created by Hitler. It could be distributed to all ranks within any branch of the Wehrmacht, Waffen-SS or the auxiliary services, and it was the highest award that the Third Reich could offer. During the war, new grades of Knight's Cross were added. The Diamonds were introduced on 28 September 1941, and were the next highest grade above the Oakleaves and Swords. Only 27 awards of Diamonds were made during the war creating an elite echelon of war heroes and many of the awards were made for acts of extreme bravery which are detailed in this volume.

This down-to-earth look at the welfare system provides readers with stories from welfare recipients themselves and from those who recently left welfare for work: how they got onto welfare, what the reality of welfare (and welfare reform) is for them, issues in raising their families, their plans, hopes, and dreams are for the future, and some of the struggles they face as they try to leave the welfare system.   Welfare recipients who were interviewed by the author in Florida and Oregon share their perspectives on work requirements, family caps, time limits, and other features of the new welfare reform (TANF) program. They discuss the importance of a livable wage and health insurance in providing the needed security to leave welfare for good. This title represents a fascinating glimpse into assault-gun fighting in World War II by a highly decorated soldier who fought with Sturmgeschütz units in France and Russia. Heinrich Engel started the war a young enlisted soldier assigned to an antitank battalion. After participating in the Campaign in Poland, he volunteered for the newly created assault-gun branch of service, the Sturmartillerie. He was assigned to Sturmgeschütz-Batterie 660, one of the first three assault-gun batteries created by the German Army. He fought in that unit as an assault-gun driver in the French Campaign and the initial stages of the war in Russia. Heinrich Engel not only wrote down his thoughts and feelings during those times in his diaries, but captured much of what he describes in photographs. After combating sciatica, which removed him from the front lines in the early part of 1942, Engel returned to the Eastern Front in 1943 as a gun commander in the newly formed Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung 259. It was there that he was to receive the Knight’s Cross for knocking out 15 Russian tanks on a single day in September 1943. Engel returned to Germany due to continued problems with sciatica and spent the remainder of the war serving with various training establishment units. Although removed fairly early from the war, Engel’s diaries and nearly 200 black and white photographs offer insight into one of the more fascinating sidebars of armored warfare history. In addition to the many photographs, which accompany the text, additional material is provided the reader concerning Engel’s military career and the units he served in.
