Neuware - Im Jahre 1902 erhielt Theodor Mommsen den Nobelpreis für Literatur. Verliehen wurde er für ein Werk, das ein Torso war: seine 'Römische Geschichte'. Der IV. Band, der die Geschichte der Kaiserzeit bis zum Zerfall des Imperiums hätte behandeln sollen, ist nie erschienen. Über die Gründe für das Ausbleiben dieses Bandes ist viel gerätselt worden. Die Hoffnung, daß es an irgendeiner Stelle doch noch ein Manuskript der Kaisergeschichte gebe, hat sich nie erfüllt; inzwischen weiß man, daß nur einige Abschnitte geschrieben wurden, die bei dem Brand in Mommsens Haus im Juli 1880 überdies weitgehend zerstört worden sind. Obwohl Mommsen 20 Semester lang - von 1863 bis 1886 - über die Kaisergeschichte Vorlesungen gehalten hat, galt es lange als ausgemacht, daß sie sich nicht rekonstruieren ließen: Die erhalten gebliebenen Mitschriften waren zu lückenhaft und voller Hör- und Verständnisfehler. 1980 fand Alexander Demandt überraschend in einem Antiquariat eine vollständige Nachschrift der Kaiserzeitvorlesung, deren hohe Qualität sich sehr bald erwies. Auf dieser Nachschrift beruht Barbara und Alexander Demandts Edition. Damit haben wir zwar nicht den fehlenden IV. Band der Römischen Geschichte, aber doch ein Buch, das uns Mommsens Bild der Kaiserzeit vermittelt. Die 'Römische Kaisergeschichte' tritt damit neben andere postum veröffentlichte Vorlesungen, die aus unserer Kultur nicht mehr wegzudenken sind: Hegels 'Geschichtsphilosophie', Burckhardts 'Weltgeschichtliche Betrachtungen' oder Droysens 'Historik'. Ob Mommsens Kaiserzeit-Vorlesung eine vergleichbare Bedeutung gewinnen wird, muß die Nachwelt entscheiden. Daß mit ihr eine große Darstellung der Epoche vorliegt, - daran wird niemand ernsthaft zweifeln.
