Burning the Reichstag: An Investigation into the Third Reich's Enduring Mystery
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.78 $In February 1933, Adolf Hitler had only a tenuous grasp on power. Chancellor of Germany for merely four weeks, he led a fragile coalition government. The Nazis had lost seats in the Reichstag in the recent election, and claimed only three of thirteen cabinet posts. Then on February 27th, arson sent the Reichstag, the home and symbol of German democracy, up in flames. Immediately blaming the Communists, Hitler's new government approved a decree that tore the heart out of the democratic constitution of the Weimar Republic and cancelled the rule of law. Five thousand people were immediately arrested. The Reichstag fire marked the true beginning of the Third Reich, which ruled for 12 more years. The controversy surrounding the fire's origins has endured for 80.In Burning the Reichstag, Benjamin Hett offers a gripping account of Hitler's rise to dictatorship-one that challenges orthodoxy and recovers the true significance of the part the fire played. At the scene the police arrested 23-year-old Marinus van der Lubbe, a Dutch Communist stonemason. Though he was initially dismissed abroad as a Nazi tool, post-war historians since the 1950s have largely judged him solely guilty-a lone arsonist exploited by Hitler. Hett's book reopens the case, providing vivid portraits of key figures, including Rudolf Diels, Hermann Goering, Joseph Goebbels, and the historian Fritz Tobias, whose account of the fire has, until now, been the standard. Making use of a number of new sources and archives, Hett sets the Reichstag fire in a wider context, revealing how and why it has remained one of the last mysteries of the Nazi period, and one of the most controversial and contested events in the 20th century.

We Stormed the Reichstag
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.49 $In 1941 when Germany invaded the Soviet Union Vassili Subbotin was caught up as an ordinary soldier in the Red Army’s great retreat. In 1945, during the final days of the war, as a war correspondent, he went into Berlin with the troops who fought the ferocious final battles in the streets and sealed Germany’s defeat. Later he recorded in vivid impressionistic detail the climax of the last act of the campaign and of the entire war in the east – the storming of the Reichstag which came to symbolize of the Soviet victory over the Nazis. His firsthand experience of that final operation – and his insight into the small band of ordinary soldiers who played a part in it – is graphically conveyed in this memoir. In his description of the confusion and violence of the street fighting around the Reichstag and the vicious hand-to-hand floor-by-floor struggle to capture the huge shattered building, the personalities of the soldiers are revealed, as are their fears and determination. Vassili Subbotin served as a conscript in the Red Army during the Second World War, first as an infantryman during the Soviet retreat after the German invasion in 1941, then as a divisional war correspondent during the Red Army’s long advance towards Germany. He was present throughout the final battle for Berlin and observed the capture of the Reichstag at first hand. After the war he wrote this evocative memoir recording his experiences and those of the soldiers who took part, and in later life he was reunited with those who survived the fighting.

Christo & Jeanne-Claude: Wrapped Reichstag, Berlin, 1971-1995
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 794.22 $In 1977 the "wrap" artist Christo, famous for both his wrapped Roman wall and his Running Fence in northern California, proposed to wrap Germany's Reichstag--the first of three proposals to be turned down. In 1994, after a vote by the German parliament, Christo's fourth proposal to wrap the building was accepted. Wrapped Reichstag depicts the trials and tribulations, meetings, drawings, and conversations that led to the acceptance of Christo's plan. Simple chronologies give important dates in both English and German, and giant, play-by-play photographs chronicle the years of effort involved in the project's production and completion, testaments to the tenacity of all involved. Completed on June 24, 1995, the Reichstag stayed wrapped for 14 days. Photographs of the wrapped building from all angles at all times of day and night give the reader a clear idea of the finished work's grandeur.

Hitler's Volksgemeinschaft< and the Dynamics of Racial Exclusion: Violence against Jews in Provincial Germany, 1919â??1939
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 36.98 $In the spring of 1933, German society was deeply divided – in the Reichstag elections on 5 March, only a small percentage voted for Hitler. Yet, once he seized power, his creation of a socially inclusive Volksgemeinschaft, promising equality, economic prosperity and the restoration of honor and pride after the humiliating ending of World War I persuaded many Germans to support him and to shut their eyes to dictatorial coercion, concentration camps, secret state police, and the exclusion of large sections of the population. The author argues however, that the everyday practice of exclusion changed German society itself: bureaucratic discrimination and violent anti-Jewish actions destroyed the civil and constitutional order and transformed the German nation into an aggressive and racist society. Based on rich source material, this book offers one of the most comprehensive accounts of this transformation as it traces continuities and discontinuities and the replacement of a legal order with a violent one, the extent of which may not have been intended by those involved.

Terror on the Tube : Behind the Veil of 7/7 - an Investigation
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.01 $Now in an updated edition with a critique of the official 7/7 Inquest of Winter 2010-2011, Terror on the Tube remains the only book with the glaring evidence that all four Muslim scapegoats were innocent. 7/7 is Bliar's Big Lie and Reichstag Fire, False Flag Terror as pretext for war and an Orwellian, neo-fascist British police state. If 9/11 was the great pretext for war and fascism in the USA, London's 7/7 bombings brought Britain quickly closer to an Orwellian police state. Is there a basis to the "war on terror" - or is the state itself terrorizing the British populace? The answer is in this compelling investigation. In its indictment of the prime suspects - the UK, US and Israeli secret services. In its demolition of the fabricated evidence they brought into play. In its posthumous exoneration of four innocent young men, sacrificed and framed to shore up the rule of a crime cabal over our planet. In this appeal against the fascist propaganda trick of false-flag terror. Author Nick Kollerstrom has assembled the evidence and solved the mystery of the 7/7 bombings: something Britain's billion-budget security apparatus will never do.

The Diary of Georgi Dimitrov, 1933-1949
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 76.88 $Georgi Dimitrov (1882-1949) was a high-ranking Bulgarian and Soviet official, one of the most prominent leaders of the international Communist movement and a trusted member of Stalin’s inner circle. Accused by the Nazis of setting the Reichstag fire in 1933, he successfully defended himself at the Leipzig Trial and thereby became an international symbol of resistance to Nazism. Stalin appointed him head of the Communist International (Comintern) in 1935, and he held this position until the Comintern’s dissolution in 1943. After the end of the Second World War, Dimitrov returned to Bulgaria and became its first Communist premier. During the years between 1933 and his death in 1949, Dimitrov kept a diary that described his tumultuous career and revealed much about the inner working of the international Communist organizations, the opinions and actions of the Soviet leadership, and the Soviet Union’s role in shaping the postwar Eastern Europe. This important document, edited and introduced by renowned historian Ivo Banac, is now available for the first time in English. It is an essential source for information about international Communism, Stalin and Soviet policy, and the origins of the Cold War.
