'Of Good and Ill Repute': Gender and Social Control in Medieval England
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 46.89 $To be labeled "of ill repute" in medieval society implied that a person had committed a violation of accepted standards and had stepped beyond the bounds of permissible behavior. To have a reputation "of good repute", however, was so powerful as to help a person accused of a crime be acquitted by his or her fellow peers. Labeling a person in medieval times was a complex matter. Often, unwritten codes of behavior determined who was of good repute and who was not. Members of the nobility committing a "fur-collar crime" might have considerable leeway to oppress their neighbors with violence and legal violations; however, a woman caught without appropriate attire and without the proper escort hazarded the label of a "woman of ill repute." Gender, class, social statutes, wealth, connections, bribes, friends, and the community all played a role in how quickly or how permanently a person's reputation was damaged. 'Of Good and Ill Repute' examines the complex social regulations and stigmatizations that medieval society used to arrive at its decisions about condemnation and exoneration. In eleven interrelated essays, including three previously unpublished works, Hanawalt explores how social control was maintained in Medieval England in the later Middle Ages. Focusing on gender, criminal behavior, law enforcement, arbitration, and cultural rituals of inclusion and exclusion, 'Of Good and Ill Repute' reflects the most current scholarship on medieval legal history, cultural history, and gender studies. It looks at the medieval sermons, advice books, manuals of penance, popular poetry, laws, legal treatises, court records, and city and guild ordinances that drew the lines between good and bad behavior. Written in a lively, accessible, and jargon-free style, this text is essential for upper level undergraduate history courses on medieval history and women's history as well as for English courses on medieval literature.

The Origenist Controversy (Princeton Legacy Library)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 57.00 $Around the turn of the fifth century, Christian theologians and churchmen contested each other's orthodoxy and good repute by hurling charges of "Origenism" at their opponents. And although orthodoxy was more narrowly defined by that era than during Origen's lifetime in the third century, his speculative, Platonizing theology was not the only issue at stake in the Origenist controversy: "Origen" became a code word for nontheological complaints as well. Elizabeth Clark explores the theological and extra-theological implications of the dispute, uses social network analysis to explain the personal alliances and enmities of its participants, and suggests how it prefigured modern concerns with the status of representation, the social construction of the body, and praxis vis--vis theory. Shaped by the Trinitarian and ascetic debates, and later to influence clashes between Augustine and the Pelagians, the Origenist controversy intersected with patristic campaigns against pagan "idolatry" and Manichean and astrological determinism. Discussing Evagrius Ponticus, Epiphanius, Theophilus, Jerome, Shenute, and Rufinus in turn, Clark concludes by showing how Augustine's theory of original sin reconstructed the Origenist theory of the soul's pre-existence and "fall" into the body.Originally published in 1992.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Dieu dans L'art
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 5.33 $Dieux dans l'art part François Boespflug DROZ, 2012. Couverture souple pagine 454 Edition originale. Size: 190x120mm

Abandoned Women (Paperback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.66 $In the early 19th century, crofters and villagers streamed into the burgeoning cities of Scotland, and families splintered. Orphan girls, single mothers, and women on their own all struggled to feed and clothe themselves. For some, petty theft became a part of life. Any woman deemed "habite & repute a thief" might find herself before the High Court of Justiciary, tried for yet another minor theft and sentenced to transportation "beyond Seas." Lucy Frost memorably paints the portrait of a boatload of women and their children who arrived in Hobart in 1838. Instead of serving time in prison, the women were sent to work as unpaid servants in the houses of settlers. Feisty Scottish convicts, unaccustomed to bowing and scraping, often irritated their middle-class employers, who charged them with insolence, or refusing to work, or getting drunk. A stint in the female factory became their punishment. Many women survived the convict system and shaped their own lives once they were free. They married, had children, and found a place in the community. Others, though, continued to be plagued by errors and disasters until death.

And the Sea Is Never Full: Memoirs, 1969-
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.14 $As this concluding volume of his moving and revealing memoirs begins, Elie Wiesel is forty years old, a writer of international repute. Determined to speak out more actively for both Holocaust survivors and the disenfranchised everywhere, he sets himself a challenge: "I will become militant. I will teach, share, bear witness. I will reveal and try to mitigate the victims' solitude." He makes words his weapon, and in these pages we relive with him his unstinting battles. We see him meet with world leaders and travel to regions ruled by war, dictatorship, racism, and exclusion in order to engage the most pressing issues of the day. We see him in the Soviet Union defending persecuted Jews and dissidents; in South Africa battling apartheid and supporting Mandela's ascension; in Cambodia and in Bosnia, calling on the world to face the atrocities; in refugee camps in Albania and Macedonia as an emissary for President Clinton. He chastises Ronald Reagan for his visit to the German military cemetery at Bitburg. He supports Lech Walesa but challenges some of his views. He confronts Francois Mitterrand over the misrepresentation of his activities in Vichy France. He does battle with Holocaust deniers. He joins tens of thousands of young Austrians demonstrating against renascent fascism in their country. He receives the Nobel Peace Prize.Through it all, Wiesel remains deeply involved with his beloved Israel, its leaders and its people, and laments its internal conflicts. He recounts the behind-the-scenes events that led to the establishment of the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. He shares the feelings evoked by his return to Auschwitz, by his recollections of Yitzhak Rabin, and by his memories of his own vanished family. This is the magnificent finale of a historic memoir.

From Servant to Queen: A Journey through Victorian Mathematics
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 49.97 $With a few notable exceptions, pure mathematics in Britain at the beginning of the nineteenth century was mainly a recreation for amateurs. Drawing on primary sources, John Heard provides an engaging account of the process by which it rose to become an academic discipline of repute which by the First World War was led by G. H. Hardy, and supported by the internationally-respected London Mathematical Society. In chronicling that rise, this book describes key contributions and the social environment in which mathematicians operated, using contemporary commentary where appropriate. No mathematical knowledge is required, and readers with a wide range of interests and backgrounds will find much to enjoy here. The material is presented from an impartial point of view, and provides full references to help any researchers who want to dig deeper into the original sources. The result is a unique insight into the world of Victorian mathematics and science.

Bernard Tschumi: Architecture: Concept & Notation
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 42.32 $Initially known as a theorist exploring the spatial-political implications of the May 1968 uprisings, Bernard Tschumi emerged as an architect of international repute in the 1980s with his Parc de la Villette, a 125-acre cultural park located in northeastern Paris. His buildings and design theory famously draw on an array of disciplines, such as literature, cinema and philosophy. All aspects of the man and his work are examined in Bernard Tschumi, published to accompany a landmark retrospective at the Centre Pompidou. This volume is the most complete and authoritative of any yet published on the celebrated architect: no mere reference book, it boasts a wide selection of previously unpublished designs for cities as varied as Santo Domingo and Dubai, accompanied by the original commissioning plans, sketches and models. Concise case studies complement the projects discussed, walking the reader through the rationale of each design. Essays by Frédéric Migayrou, the head of the Centre Pompidou architecture and design department, give insight into Tschumi's thinking; he unfolds and explores conceptual questions of design through the lenses of film, literature, visual art and philosophy, particularly deconstruction. Abstract theory and concrete design intermingle in Tschumi's body of work, as they do in this volume, to produce the radical, deconstructive effect for which he is famed.Bernard Tschumi (born 1944) was Dean of the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University from 1988 to 2003. He lives in Paris and New York.
