Eisenhower's 'broad front' policy called for the whole of the Rhineland to be taken before pushing his troops across the Rhine and into Germany itself. The Germans opened the Roer dams in a vain bid to temper this massive Allied offensive and this called for a drastic change in tactics. The ensuing battle was characterised by amphibious assaults on the fortified villages of the flooded Rhine lowlands, frontal assaults on the much vaunted Siegfried Line and the grim fighting for the Reichswald Forest. It was to be 'the last great killing ground in the west'.

Have you ever heard of the American occupation of the Rhineland after World War I? When the war in Europe was over on November 11th, 1918, an American Army of Occupation comprising 250,000 men started moving from France towards the east. Their destination: The Rhine. In the armistice, Germany had granted the victorious powers the right to occupy the Rhineland. And so it happened that thousands and thousands of young Americans came to a land full of castles, vineyards and centuries-old traditions. In their headquarters in Koblenz, the American Army of Occupation controlled large areas along the rivers Rhine and Mosel. Not only did they get to know the local customs, they also brought their own culture with them. Donuts, baseball or American football became a common thing in the Rhineland. And last but not least, there were the German Fräuleins that attracted the young Americans. Only in 1923, the last occupation troops left the Rhineland. Today, this part of German-American history is almost completely forgotten. The German historian Marc Holzheimer intends to change this. In his book, he retells the story of the American Occupation of the Rhineland. It covers the events along Rhine and Mosel as well as the political context in international affairs. Furthermore, the book contains plenty of contemporary photographs, which allow the reader to get a real impression of the occupation time. Produced for a nun at the turn of the 14th century, it served as an aid to mystical devotions in which images played as central a role as the written word. Visionary depictions of Paradise, the Song of Songs, the Virgin Mary, the Trinity, and hundreds of other subjects based on texts ranging from the Bible to the "Lives of the Desert Fathers" together form a devotional program that transports the reader toward contemplative union with God. Combining iconographic and contextual analysis, the author examines the interaction of image and text in the devotional experience of the religious women who formed the primary audience for didactic and mystical literature in Flanders and the Rhineland. Finally, he discusses the role of female spirituality in transforming the use of both verbal and visual imagery in late medieval devotional practice.

Soon, however, military and economic crises drove a shift in the nature of France's war effort. What started as a war for liberty became a war for conquest, one that brought devastating exploitation to the Rhineland. It was during this time that French foreign policy became influenced by the idea of attaining the natural frontiers - the Alps, the Pyrenees, and, most significantly, the Rhine. Although often portrayed as a diplomatic tradition of the French monarchy, Jordan R. Hayworth shows how the natural frontiers policy was born during the Revolution. In addition, he examines the intense and consequential debates that arose over the policy, which caused much confusion in the war and helped to undermine France's democratic experiment.
