The Planning of Roman Roads and Walls in Northern Britain
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 37.92 $Of all the monuments from the 350 or more years of Roman rule in Britain, perhaps the most magnificent to come down to us today are their roads and the two great walls that they built across northern Britain - Hadrian's Wall and the Antonine Wall in Scotland. Yet, before these vast structures were built, their courses would need to have been chosen and their lines set out across the countryside. In general, Roman literature is silent about how they did this, but recently John Poulter has devised a way of detecting the directions in which Roman surveyors may have been working when setting out their roads and walls. Applying this to Dere Street, the main Roman road from the Vale of York up into Scotland, has led to a radical reappraisal of how and when this important road was planned, and when it was built. At the suggestion of leading archaeologists, John has also applied his methodology to the planning of Hadrian's Wall and the Antonine Wall in Scotland - and, again, unearthed a multitude of surprises for both of these monuments. Not only were their processes of planning found to be quite unlike what might have been expected, but the lines that their designers chose to take across the landscapes offer us new insights into the intended purposes of these structures. In addition to these individual studies, John offers comments about Roman roads in general, and compares them with General Wade's Military Roads in Scotland. He also discounts much previous writing about Roman roads as being too uncritical, and introduces an approach to the analysis of archaeological findings which seeks to deliver interpretations that are as objective and as balanced as possible.

The Secret History of the Roman Roads of Britain
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.48 $There have been many books on Britain's Roman roads, but none have considered in any depth their long-term strategic impact. Mike Bishop shows how the road network was vital not only in the Roman strategy of conquest and occupation, but influenced the course of British military history during subsequent ages. The author starts with the pre-Roman origins of the network (many Roman roads being built over prehistoric routes) before describing how the Roman army built, developed, maintained and used it. Then, uniquely, he moves on to the post-Roman history of the roads. He shows how they were crucial to medieval military history (try to find a medieval battle that is not near one) and the governance of the realm, fixing the itinerary of the royal progresses. Their legacy is still clear in the building of 18th century military roads and even in the development of the modern road network. Why have some parts of the network remained in use throughout? The text is supported with clear maps and photographs. Most books on Roman roads are concerned with cataloguing or tracing them, or just dealing with aspects like surveying. This one makes them part of military landscape archaeology.

The Roads of the Roman [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.00 $While the ancient Romans were not the first society to construct a system of great roads, they did introduce important technical advancements and develop a highly organized and pervasive network that joined their territories in a gigantic web. Spanning over 50,000 miles and three continents, the network was a defensive matrix as well as a means to integrate the provinces into their empire. Without it, the empire would never have grown so vast or lasted as long. Beginning with the city streets of Rome, Romolo Staccioli's study progresses outward to the suburban routes linking Rome with surrounding towns; the Via Latina, the national road that was the backbone of the entire system; and the great "consular" roads such as the Via Appia that connected Rome with the distant regions of its sprawling empire. Staccioli considers the infrastructure (bridges, viaducts, and tunnels) that supported the system as well as the facilities (rest stations as well as vehicle and sundry services) that supported its travelers. Finally, he discusses the extent to which this system survived the end of the ancient world and remained operative, with various modifications, into the modern age.

Roman Marble Quarries in Southern Euboea and the Associated Road Systems.
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 106.95 $This is the first study of the particularly interesting network of quarries and roads in southern Euboea. The quarries were a major source of Cippolino marble in Roman times. The study presents a survey and examination of the quarries and roads serving them and analyses of samples of marble collected there. The inaccessibility of the quarries has meant that they and the road systems around them have been unusually well preserved, but also that existing literature on the area is scanty and far from accurate. The material discussed here is of great historical, economic and technological significance. The preliminary mapping and registration offered here is of further value in the attempt to save the materials from further deterioration and destruction.
