Algebraic geometry may, in an elementary way, be viewed as the study of the structure and properties of the solutions of systems of algebraic equations. The aim of these notes is to provide access to the methods of algebraic geometry for engineers and applied scientists through the motivated context of control theory. I began the development of these notes over fifteen years ago with a series of lectures given to the Control Group at the Lund Institute of Technology in Sweden. Over the following years, I presented the material in courses at Brown several times and must express my appreciation for the feedback (sic!) received from the students. I have attempted throughout to strive for clarity, often making use of constructive methods and giving several proofs of a particular result. Since algebraic geometry draws on so many branches of mathematics and can be dauntingly abstract, it is not easy to convey its beauty and utility to those interested in applications. I hope at least to have stirred the reader to seek a deeper understanding of this beauty and utility in control theory. The first volume dea1s with the simplest control systems (i. e. single input, single output linear time-invariant systems) and with the simplest algebraic geometry (i. e. affine algebraic geometry).

But they have often not been attentive enough to locals’ horizons of concern and to the enormous disparity in population size between these groups and other societies. Us, Relatives explores how scalar blindness skews our understanding of these cultures and the debates they inspire. Drawing on her long-term research with a community of South Asian foragers, Nurit Bird-David provides a scale-sensitive ethnography of these people as she encountered them in the late 1970s and reflects on the intellectual journey that led her to new understandings of their lifeways and horizons. She elaborates on indigenous modes of “being many” that have been eclipsed by scale-blind anthropology, which generally uses its large-scale conceptual language of persons, relations, and ethnic groups for even tiny communities. Through the idea of pluripresence, Bird-David reveals a mode of plural life that encompasses a diversity of humans and nonhumans through notions of kinship and shared life. She argues that this mode of belonging subverts the modern ontological touchstone of “imagined communities,” rooted not in sameness among dispersed strangers but in intimacy among relatives of infinite diversity.

In the current decade we are witnessing an emergence of inverse scattering theory. Before we embark on this exciting journey, perhaps this is an appropriate time to summarize and assess in one volume some of the important re­ sults of electromagnetic scattering which have been found in recent decades. Since the end of WW II two significant physical phenomena in electromag­ netic scattering, optimal polarization and exterior resonant frequencies, have been discovered and a powerful mathematical technique, called the integral equation method, has been incorporated. These physical quantities, which characterize the scattered field for a given scatterer, are not directly observ­ able but can only be extracted by mathematical means from the measured scattering data. They are given special attention.
